I wouldnt have thought so tbh, at the very least the cam cover needs to come off and check the static timing. If both cams still line up then I would suspect the VVT unit is at fault but without a wiring check to the ecu its difficult to say 100% but its likely, expecially if oil pressure has been an issue, you just want to make 100% sure a cam hasnt slipped a tooth, but tbh I doubt it.

Thanks a lot Techie, appreciate the response. One further thing just occurred to me though. Given the first code I had was that the timing was over-retarded but the second was that it was over-advanced, that wouldn't happen if something had slipped a tooth would it? If it's going one way first, then the other way, would that suggest a faulty sensor or adjuster? Or was that basically what you said?

Well I've been clearing the codes from time to time and checking them, it was giving 16395 the last few times (over-advanced) but today I checked it and that code (which was there before) had erased itself and I had 16396 (over-retarded) instead. Reset that then drove home from work, had some dinner then back out again and the EML came back on right then. Sometimes it takes a couple of days or so for the EML to appear, sometimes almost right away although the codes are logged just by starting the car and taking it for a short drive.
Going to take it to the dealer first chance I get so they can do proper diagnostics on it. Just hope I'm not risking major damage until then.

OK well on Thursday I was about to head off for my parents' place for Christmas. Had the EML on when I was nipping about town getting last minute gifts. When I went to pick up the other half from her work to set off I noticed the EML had gone out all by itself. Checked for codes again and still had 16396 so decided to clear it and see if it came back. After the 220 mile trip to the 'rents it still hadn't come back.
Checked again after the return trip home today, still no codes and no EML. So not sure what was causing it but given that the code was flagging after even a very short drive and after two long ones and a few short ones in between... Not going to say it's gone away for fear of jinxing it but it's looking good at the moment... Will keep an eye on it for a bit and see what happens. Now to sort out my boost issue.

have you had 16396 come on recently, i have had it on since engine rebuild tried new sensor and still not cured, car has new oil pump fitted but fault is still there,
cars runnig standard map but with 440cc injectors could this be causing the fault does anyone know?

I haven't seen that one since my last post back there in December dude. Think it was cropping up on mine for about 2 weeks before it stopped appearing all by itself. Just before it started coming up I'd had the rocker cover off and the gaskets under it replaced but as far as I know the garage wouldn't have had to touch the cams or tensioners etc. How long has yours been appearing?
Based on the Ross Tech wiki description (click here) which says it can be the adjuster being stuck, I wondered if maybe it was possible/easy to put the rocker cover on in such a way as to affect the camshaft adjuster, and maybe mine managed to work itself free.
That said, I was looking for info on something else altogether today and found a post on Pistonheads forums that suggested overfuelling could be a reason for high oil consumption so if those are linked then that might mean oil pressure to the top end could be affected too.

cheers mate im going to change hydralic tensioner an hydralic tappets as there the only old thing on the engine,
im running 440cc at 4bar on standard map,
had car on dyno and fueling is being trimmed back by ecu or ecu has addapted cant remember what mapper said,
im at a lose end but looks like will change these parts and see how get on,

Fair enough but I'd still recommend leaving it at least a couple of weeks, mine did stop all by itself and I read posts of mk1 TT and S3 owners who've said the same - the tensioners are about £250 aren't they? I'm certainly glad I didn't spend that given I ended up not having to.

Sorry to drag up but I have been getting code 16395,3 times in 2 days now,is that picture of the vvt sensor the same thing as a camshaft sensor?if not can someone explain to me where the camshaft sensor and plug is please?also is camshaft sensor replacement a diy job for someone whos no expert but not at all stupid and has replaced a few parts in the engine before?Thanks.
Oh and I dont know if a slight oil leak from rocker cover could cause this?I also have a rattle on startup when car has been stood for ages and is proper cold,thanks

I'd get your oil pressure checked - the cam tensioners are driven by oil pressure, so i discovered since I last posted in this thread. It may not be low enough yet to trip the warning light on the dash but still enough not to be able to operate the camshaft adjusters yet.
Not sure whether that could be caused by the leaking rocker gasket, unless there's signs of oil spraying out onto other parts of the engine bay?
OK re. the Forge valve, get in touch with them, they can send you a service kit (not sure if it's normally free or not, depends on how old the valve is). It's easy enough to service it too.
The 16395 and 16396 codes *could* both be oil pressure-related so get that checked ASAP, although 16727 suggests there may be a camshaft position sensor fault causing the first two. Either way you'll need to get the leaky gasket changed (almost certainly rocker cover gasket, that happened to mine) so get the oil pressure checked at the same time.

No mate codes never came back,all 3 codes,easy fix and only 18 buck for a generic sensor from ebay

is easy though just take charge pipe off and all pipes attatched to it obviously then take cam belt cover off and you will see it,I had to hold cover to the side though as it was catching on the cambelt cogs/gears and I did not want to pull to hard and have snapped plastic in the cambelt gears,carful not to drop anything down there.
