Now this weather has turned baltic the last month i have been getting an alarming like vibrating chattery diesel sounding clacking for like a second on the enitial start up then alls fine! It does not do it every time, and when the engines warm say go to the shop then come out and start the car alls well just when its really cold its very strange! Any ideas?
Also does anyone get when sitting in the car when the car is at idle a faint knocking noise that comes and goes really faint tho?

I wonder if its the fact that the oil is still quite thick and not being pumped around your head quickly enough. Does it quieten down a lot when warm? Have you kept up with servicings?

Yeah servicing is all up to date and oil is change every 2.500 - 3.000 miles good oil too not cheap stuff! Id also like to clarify its just when i turn the car over lik ea second on start up an audible clack clack clack but like clclclcclclclcl hard to explain! then all is well!

I've had that in mine for about 2 years, regular 10k servicing and been told not to worry, just a bit of plastic vibrating until it gets warm. It only happens on the first key turn and not all the time only when very cold.

As Jonesy said, mine does the same for a split second and stops. Again only when very cold.
As long as it doesn't continue for than a second or two I wouldn't worry.

might not be the secondary air pump, as far as i know when you turn the car on the choke is on full, so the secondary air pump pumps fresh air into the system so it isn't so heavily filled with fumes or i think you'd get a fault come on so when the choke turns off so does the secondary air pump and when its on its way out you'll hear it make a whoosh noise because the two plastic casings aren't being held by the rivets anymore so pull it out drill out old rivets bolt together then refit :)

I get the same noise on mine, I think it's the pinion on the starter motor clattering/rattling when it's returning(pulling back off the flywheel) only happens for a second then goes off and only when it's v cold! Don't think we need to worry about it.

Just bought one yesterday and it sounds like it does a similar thing. its going into the dealer on wednesday for some work and i'll raise the issue and post the response here.

right im getting the same noise disconnected sai still got the noise gune get the sump off tommorw and check oil pick up pipe and oil pump

air con is in with no air con rad (due to intercooler) so it aint workin anyways

a mate of mine had the same noise it turned out to be the camchain tensioner not tensioning the chain he ended up replacing the chain and the tensioner he paid an arm and a leg

ye mine sounds **** but only when cold for 2 seconds, i dont think it is the timing chain tensioner from what i have read? i think it is more of an oil flow problem to the head maybe, sumps coming off tommorow for a closer look

no worries i now also suspect the starter motor could be a fun day...
