Cold Start Up Noise! EEK!

Sounds like cam chain tensioner to me too! Common on these engines I believe.
Mine has done it since purchase too. Rough diesel noise on initial start up. And sometimes at tickover faintly! Believe it's worn plastic tensioner on vvt cam tensioner. I intend to replace mine asap, and I have had sump off previously to clean oil pickup.

Do these enigines have hydraulic tappets? If so could be clackin until hydraulic pressure has built up. Just a thought that might help.

i kind of ruled out cam chain tensioner now from the help of youtube lol i reckon its starter motor but its a pig to get to, anyway oil is out going to inspect oil pick up anyways as engine is on 94k

well sum came off today and to be fair i thought it was going to be alot worse looked pretty good but decided to clean pick up and sump to ensure no future problems, al fingers now point to starter motor i reckon

Mines still doing it its a very loud vibrating rattle for like a second on starting to me it sound like a vibration clatter of something loose doesnt always do it which makes it hard to find rather loud tho??????? and body think its the cambelt tensioner????

i have this problem on start up aswell,been doing it ever since i bought it,nasty rattling sound for about 2 seconds but somtimes it keeps doing it,i have to put a few revs on to stop it.i asked my garage he said sounds like camchain but wasnt 100%.would be good to know the outcome,its quite annoying.

Mine does sound a little bit like a diesel when it first starts, like just at the moment when the engine itself first catches from the starter motor. The diesel-like sound is gone as soon as the engine settles at idle tho. I got my cambelt changed yesterday, can't remember if it sounded any different when I started it at first this morning, will try and pay attention next time i start it from cold and post back.

ok mine is getting this noise now, generally on very cold mornings, but the worrying thing is it lasts anything from 20secs - 50secs, not looking good :-/

Is it mapped. Mine does it with map on but not stock.

yeah mines mapped,but it still did it since i bought it when it was standard.
