CR170 mpg

Hello all.
Just wondered if someone could help out a work colleague with some fuel consumption figures for the CR170 engine, as fitted across the VAG range.
He's got a new VW Tiguan, with full-time four-wheel drive, and says the car is sluggish and he can't do better than 32 mpg overall - even sticking to 65 mph on the motorway. It's done 2k and he's had the car into his VW dealer, who are saying they can find no fault with it.
My Exeo Sport saloon is a 143 with 37k on it, so it's nicely loosened up, and I'm getting over 50 mpg on a regular basis. Then again, it's not lugging the 4x4 gear of the Tiguan around, but even allowing for that and a tight engine, surely he should be getting better mpg? Or - like the 143 - does the bigger diesel improve with miles? (The official combined figure for the Tiguan 170 is 47, but we all know how wildly inaccurate they are).
My workmate's also having problems with the factory sat-nav and wants to reject the car (he was impressed with my Exeo and is considering an ST 170 instead, despite its lack of AWD) although VW are reluctant to take it back. Any thoughts anyone?

I get around 42mpg on long runs at an indicated 85, and 35mpg in town, but I do have a very heavy right foot. ST170and have done around 5K.

Hi there. I have a 2.0Tdi Yeti, 4wd, 140bhp. I get a consistent 45mpg, slightly more in the summer and slightly less in winter. On a good run in summer I have reached the heady heights of 50mpg but not more. I have now done 26k miles and I can't say I have noticed any change in the engine, the so called loosening up.

Now clearly, mine is the 140bhp not the 170bhp but in all other aspects the car is pretty much the same and the supposed mpg is virtually the same.

I keep an eye on a Yeti forum and there are plenty of people there who have the 170bhp 4wd Yeti. They tend to get around 42mpg, just under 40mpg if they give it some welly. They all report that this car is nothing like sluggish and having had the 140bhp I believe them. It maybe that the Tiguan is heavier than the Yeti and that may make a difference but low 30's, especially if you are driving carefully, seems wrong. I can't believe there is that much difference in the cars when the engine and so many other bits will be the same.

Has your friend looked on a Tiguan forum?

I don't know, although it's something I'll suggest to him. Having gone on one myself - purely in the interests of research, you understand - 40-ish seems to be the norm for the 170 Tiguan, so I'll pass that on to him, along with your comments. The general consensus seems to be that it's no ball of fire performance-wise, though. Thanks, all.

Interesting you say that about the performance as the Yeti people talk about the 170 being hot hatch like. I take that with a bit of a pinch of salt but I do expect it has a bit of zing about it. I can fly my 140 Yeti around if required and I've driven the 170 Exeo so I would expect extra performance from the 170 Yeti. Maybe the Tiguan is set up differently and maybe it is also simply heavier, it does look slightly larger than the Yeti. Best of luck.

Had my 170 ST since July. Fuel consumption is much improved now got 9,000 on the clock.

According to the onboard computer:-
- Urban driving now antwhere between 42 and 48mpg
- Motorway (fast) 46-48mpg
- Motorway 90miles (through the 20miles of 50mph ave speed cameras then "progressive" but steady on cruise control) I show 51, and the Mrs gets 52....supposedly

So very pleased after a V6 3.0CDTi averaging 32-36mpg

Friend has a Crysler voyager and is "pleased" with 24mpg!!!!

Tamworth, Staffs
Mines done 12K in 4 months.
Majority of this being motorways around 75-80 mph.

47-49mpg on the computer, never seen 50mpg yet but happy with results so far.

Sounds good. Looking at buying the 170 ST and anything in the 40's would make me happy.

I currently have a 160PS Vauxhall Insignia which performs well (damn unreliable though!) but it struggles to average 35.

Can't say I'm overly keen on the Tiguan, too heavy-looking, bland, pricey and - by the sound of it - thirsty too. If it was my money, I'd go for the Yeti every time. Looks like a lot of fun and seems very capable, without all the badge snobbery.

....although obviously I'm not going to be telling my mate any of the above. After all, nobody likes being told they've bought the wrong car!

misconception here they maybe the same engine but lots of things change on how it performs. weight of the car each model from basic up, awd or 2wd auto or manual, and gearing.
right now our exeo getting 38mpg lots of short town trips.

Just to update this thread - I looked at the 'real world' fuel consumption of my ST170 - and it is 32.9 MPG after 4769 miles. Actually, its probably fractionally worse, as I've not got the exact figure for the first tank of fuel, but I'd say its pretty close to the real figure. As I said previously, I have a heavy right foot, and its about 50% city but nonetheless there is little comparison to the figures I've seen others report here - and I don't think there is anything wrong with my car ...

On my old 143 Diesel I got an indicated average of around 43mpg and a real world average of closer to 39mpg. Mostly A and B Road driving of about 30 miles per day (generally at 3000 rpm or higher ), with the odd 200 mile motorway trip thrown in cruising at about 80ish. That was over a total of about 14,000 miles. If I drove it like my granny I could manage 46mpg real world average. But who the heck wants to spend their life doing 40mph in 6th everywhere? Manufacturers quoted MPG and real world MPG are never even close in my experience mostly due to the human behind the wheel.

I too used to have a grand voyager 3.0 CRD and 24mpg was on a good day.

Now I have a Petrol 2.0TFSI... economy...nah. ;)
