I've owned my CR170 turbo for three years. Still love it.

I bought it with 22k on the clock and on occassion, usually at a constant speed on the motorway, I could hear the turbo whistling. I've now covered 72k and the whistling is more common. Particularly since the last service.

Is this common, or something to worry about? Not sure of the track record of VAG turbos.

Qestion:-

Does the whistle occur during acceleration or just motorway cruising?

If its the turbo thats whistling you should hear it when accelerating (unless the engine noise covers it) as more gas means turbo spools up.

Have you lost power if so check your intercooler and turbo hoses for leaks.

No noise at all on acceleration. The noise is only apparent on part throttle on the motorway. I've not noticed any loss in power and the mpg is getting better. It always does in Summer. I'm guessing I'm worrying about nowt.

I don't have this issue on mine, however I do find the internal fan whistles occassionally depending on fan speed/cabin temperature it's trying to regulate.

I don't think you'd be able to hear the turbo whistle at motorway crusing speeds? If you were suffering a whine/noisey turbo on acceleration I'd feel that would point towards turbo problems.

Warmer ambient temperatures allows for increased mpg; engine warms to operating temperature quicker and we're not being sold winter diesel anymore.

No noise on acceleration. I've stopped worrying about it until/if it gets noisy. I noticed it after the last service and I wonder if they've used a cheaper air filter.

It never occurred to me that we got winter diesel in winter, and it never occurred to me it would give poorer MPG. I always attributed the Summer (!!) improvement to the car getting up to temp quicker.

Thanks for the feedback.

Air filter wouldn't make a difference, I'd look at some turbo cleaner could be carbon build up, what fuel do you use by the way?

I use whatever is convenient. Often supermarket stuff. Not heard of turbo cleaner. Time for reasearch.

That's something I'd personally never do with a diesel use supermarket fuel... always use shell v power. First thing people blame is supermarket fuel, it sounds like a build up of carbon on the turbo that's the most common thing sticky vanes. I'd use a good turbo cleaner. Also if you persist on using the supermarket diesel to put a cleaner through the system often. I can appreciate not everyone has access to a shell garage in there town / door step.
