Alright peeps just a quick question my gearbox oil was empty in the box when i went to have it changed, but now the garage has refilled with fresh, its started making kinda like a knocking noise when the clutch is not engaged as soon as you put clutch in it stops though. I took it back to the garage as i was thinking thrust bearing was going on clutch but the mechanic said he thought it sounded like the main drive on the actual gearbox, wat do you guys reckon as it was making no noise when there was no oil in but now theres oil in there its making this weird noise Do you reckon it could be my clutch need bleeding or somethiong like that

think its just normal wear mate but yeah deffo thrust bearing, tbh ive had this go in previous cars and not actually done anything about it and its been fine

I've also left my thust bearing (or release bearing) in other (rover based) cars for up to a year.. the noise gets worse as teh bearing breaks up more in it's housing, and eventually it won't 'bear' any thrust so you'll struggle to get it into gear smoothly. At least you can start to save up for a few months.

Hey i am having a similar problem with my 02 ibiza chill i think...

car developed a 'helicoptor' noise (as described by my sis) few weeks or so back. It is drive assisted so speeds and slows with revs but stops when clutch is down or when in neutral. Took it to a garage where a m8 works- they just took it for a spin, said it was coming from gearbox and said best thing is to try sell it (too costly to take gearbox apart to find out whats up compared to worth of car).

So i suppose a better description of the sound is as if one of the cogs is hitting something as it spins- could this actually be whats happening??

car seems to be driving normal- no loss of power or anything. has always had a stiff clutch though

suggestions??

I think the 1.4's and 1.2's have fairly frequent gearbox issues, but only from what i've read... why not find a mobile mechanic or someone to actually do the job properly for you, rather than telling you to just buy another car.
