Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me before I have to do the 50-odd mile round trip to my nearest stealers!

I had my cambelt & water pump change done at Seat a couple of weeks ago, and ever since it seems to run a little rougher at idle. Beforehand it was perfectly smooth, but now there's an intermittent shudder that can be felt inside the cabin. It's not massively noticeable, but I'm aware of it because it was 100% smooth in the past!

The rpm seems to stay pretty stable at 750rpm, and it doesn't look to me from watching the rev counter that it's losing rpm or having to hunt for 750 to prevent a stall etc etc. This makes me slightly worried as I'm not convinced it's just a simple timing problem that can be tweaked.

Also, if I stand behind the car while it's idling, there's a noticeable intermittent noise from the exhaust. Every few seconds it seems to 'cough' out a small surge of exhaust gases, and if I put my hand close I can feel it as well as hear it.

One last thing- I don't know if it's just me or not, but there seems to be a very slight hesitation now when I accelerate hard. There's no vibration or whine at all, which makes me think it's probably not a misfire, and when I'm just driving normally about town there's no issue whatsoever. I'm hoping that the cambelt change hasn't somehow affected the map on the car (Seat were told about the map and I made sure they wrote it in big letters on the job card before I handed the keys over!!!)

Any advice would be appreciated :D

mine does this and has done since stage one the shudder does get anoying not sure what could cause it..

i find that it does it more if you turn the heaters off as it idles a little lower

Hmmm, mine was fine after the map, but it only seems to have manifested itself since Seat spent the day deep within the bowels of the engine changing the cambelt and water pump! It was most noticeable yesterday when I had the car parked out on the drive with the engine running, but with the garage door open & the back end pointing into the garage itself; the deep bassy rumble you get from the K1 exhaust kept stuttering and reverberating round the garage, making it really obvious! Got me a bit worried...

Same problem

Just wondering if you ever got to the bottom of this? Mine does the same. Only noticed it recently but then mine doesn't do many miles so it could have been there for a while

Did you find it was quite a harsh noise coming from the cambelt area? Mine is doing the same so wondering whether it's not lined up properly? (whether this is possible I don't know?) obviously if the belt isn't correctly aligned then it wouldn't time right but I could be totally wrong? Mines going in this week for it to be checked as they can't prove if it was previously done (garage that had the car before said they've done it) but a weird tapping/ticking noise coming from my cambelt area?

annoying

Haven't had my head under the bonnet yet. Only truly noticed it yesterday. I am kinda worried as I have an extended warranty which runs out in a month. Maybe I should have a word with the stealers.

I've not noticed any sound coming from the cambelt, but I've got it booked in back at the Stealers where the work was done tomorrow, so I'll see what they say and let you know...

The Cupras have a DMF don't they? This shaking isn't being caused by this failing is it? I'm off to check my warranty policy tonight!

So dude, what's the gen from the dealers? Good news I hope!?

You're gonna love this, given what you already think about this particular Stealers mate...!

They ran a diagnostic check and it threw up the 'Exhaust Flap Valve 1- N321- Open circuit' static fault that's been mentioned in the forum before. This completely bamboozled all their service guys because they'd never seen it before. If I remember right from reading up on it earlier today, the Cupra doesn't even have that valve!

They sent this down to their tech guys as a file via email, for them to look at & create a test plan for the mechanic(s) to run; they still hadn't got round to this by the time they closed so I've got to ring tomorrow afternoon to see if it's arrived [:@]

They then dug out the parts diagram for the section of the engine that the diagnostics told them threw up the fault, before pointing out the DV to me as the likely cause (???!!!!). I queried that for obvious reasons, and they then changed their minds (especially when I told them it wasn't the OEM DV, it was an upgraded part that was much less likely to fail!) & said the fault originated from a solenoid valve behind the DV.

The upshot is, they haven't a clue what's causing it. The chief mechanic has a hunch that it's a wire into the solenoid valve that's snapped and thrown the fault up, but they'd have to dig into the engine to find out as it's buried and they can't see it simply by taking the engine cover off. They want to run the test plan first though once (if?) it arrives back from the tech guys.

I really wish I knew exactly what was involved in changing the cambelt (in terms of what they have to remove from within the engine bay and if any of this could've snapped the wire, if that does turn out to be the cause), because I find it an unbelievable coincidence that this fault manifested itself directly after the cambelt change was done. Problem is, it'd be really hard to prove and avoid the impending labour bill!

Thoughts on a postcard guys??!!

Holy crap dude, I fu*king hate those guys there! Did that cocky gothic one get on his high misinformed horse this time?! Tw*t!

Sorry to hear its not good news/an easy fix mate, really hope that it does end up being something simple for you tho and it doesn't involve a massive labour bill!

On a brighter note, any more news on NZ? ;)

It seems I should be booking mine in now too. 1 month of warranty left so better make sure I get some use out of it. Thanks for the updates. Hopefully my dealer might be of some use, but I won't hold my breath.

Haha no he kept pretty quiet to be honest!

I've done a bit of digging online and it looks like it may well be a wiring issue, which is a bit of a sh*tter because to fix it they'd have to disconnect the battery, so I'd kiss goodbye to the remap! Gonna drop Will at P Torque a PM and see if there's anything he could suggest...

On the plus side, it looks like NZ is a goer :D Due down at Brize on the 23rd to fly out on the 24th, happy days! I'm planning on heading over to Lincoln at some point that week once we've moved everything south, to grab some food & a beer with everyone before I go- I'll drop you a text once I know the score for definite :)

Dude, glad to hear about NZ, that'll be sweeeeeeeeeeeet!:D

Hope you get everything sorted with the car and P-Torque etc and it doesnt take too long either.

Defo give me a shout when your down this way then mate, will be good to have a few booze cakes before you go!;)

Any news from the stealers or are you leaving it for the time being?

No mate I'm leaving it for the time being. It's only gonna be used once a week to give it a run out while I'm abroad with work for the next few months, so it can wait. I'm not going back to Seat for them to run a test plan that doesn't really tell them anything, then get a ridiculous labour bill for their trouble.

When I get back it's going back to P-Torque so I can blow all the extra wages I've earned in overseas allowances on a stage 2+ map and all the bolt ons I need to go with it!!! I'll ask him to have a look at it while I'm there; I've got far more faith in Will's knowledge of the TFSI engine than Seat themselves... [:@]

Did you book yours in in the end?
