Hi,

I'm looking to purchase a Dash Cam for my MK3.

Rang Seat today and this is what they have quoted me:

Dash Cam: £185

Fitting (Inc VAT): 106.80

Hardwire Kit: £17

This seems quite expensive.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hell yeah.

You have a choice of cheapo cams from £60 to £150.

Hardwire kit is just a step down transformer converting a piggy back fuse to a 5V USB connection.

Fitting is running the USB cable along the headlining on the left hand side, down the pillar, under the glovebox and into the fusebox. Easy to do yourself, save yourself the labour.

Agree with the above.

Best dash cam I could get was the Nextbase 512G Ultra which has a superb lens and great detail in low light and won awards left right and centre (£119 from velocityelectronics store on Ebay), and £10 for the wiring kit.

Followed the guide mentioned on this site and it took about 1.5hrs to fit in my previous Leon (wanted to take my time) and just reinstalled it in my new Leon in under 30 mins.

Give it a go.

Very easy to wire your own. If you don't fancy halfords will hardwire a dash cam for £30. Don't get ripped off by the stealers. It not hard and should not be costing over £100 to fit! Daylight robbery!

I got a cheap nextbase 212 which appears to be doing the trick. Reputable brand but one of the cheaper in their range. Got the hardwire kit too and installed it in under 30 minutes.

I see your not too far from me Ads as I'm in sunny Chorley. Happy to meet up and show what's involved in hardwiring a dashcam. Happy to give you a hand if needed ;)

Anyone got any photos of the camera mounted? My old car (Focus ST) had all the traffic camera gubbins mounted, which essentially meant it was difficult to get a good front view due to acres of plastic on the windscreen. Leon gubbins is a lot smaller but just wondering what the views people are getting are.

Here's mine, nothing visible from the driver's seat. You can just see the lens from outside (about the size of a sugar cube) if you know where to look.[B)]

Mobius, C2 wide angle lens, lens extension cable and fitted with capacitors rather than a battery. Purchased from JooVuu.

The first photo shows what you see from the driving position. I've untucked the cable that goes to the lens so you can see where it's mounted.

Taken from down by the gear stick, showing the "camera box" (it's about the size of a matchbox). The mini usb power cable runs under the headlining, down the A pillar and takes it's feed from a piggyback fuse on the cigarette lighter fuse.
The Dashcam thread I linked earlier has more details. Pretty straightforward, I've not done one before and it took me about an hour.

Using Velcro pads means it can be disconnected in a couple of seconds if required. HTH

Here's a pic of my camera mounted behind the rear view mirror. Sticks out slightly but is barely noticeable when driving and doesn't distract. Cable tucked into headlining and routed down a pillar and into fuse box.

Interference with the radio seems to be a problem for me at the moment, from what I read it's the 12-5v converter causing it? Which ones are people using that don't affect DAB reception?

I bought the nextbase hardwire kit with my dashcam as a bundle and have had no interferance issues to date.

Presumably your converter is mounted behind the dash near the fuse box?

Some people have tried ferrite cores around the USB cable. I don't have an issue with dab signal with my el cheapo transformer

Yup it actually mounted exactly in the two mounting holes in the passenger side cut-out.

Hmm could be worth a try that

I had a Mini 0803 in my Mk1, but now I've recently bought a Mk3 I'm looking at upgrading to the Mini 0906 dual camera setup. Very small & discreet cameras. Was very happy with my 0803 so I can only hope the 0906 will be even better with all the improvements they've made since then.

Out of interest what particular dashcam would SEAT have fit for you?

I have just purchased a Nextbase Duo HD 1080p dashcam. I was always going for a Nextbase model but wanted some rear footage as well. Its a small camera considering its doing two directions at once and the footage is really good quality.

Halfords have it at £165 and then hardwire fitted it a few days later for £30 which is not bad seeing as the fitting kit is about £20 anyways (depending on were you get it). They did a great job, nice and tidy and took 30 mins. So a shout out for Halfords Chesterfield as I know Halfords sometimes get blasted on here.

How a dealer can charge above £100 for fitting and THEN charge for the fitting kit is ridiculous.
