Dashboard battery light

Hi all--had a look round but cant find the answer--

I have no battery warning light come up on the dash display when the ignition is on (before starting the car) is this normal SEAT 1.9 TDI

A mechanic told me the light should be there and then go out when you start the car, if the lamp does not come on how would I know if the alternator wasnt charging.

Any help would be appreciated thanks
