Diesel V Petrol FR

Hi there just registered and looking to see what you guys think about the differences between the Deisel FR and the Petrol FR.

Read a review which say you never forget which fuel to put in when your driving the Diesel FR.

So was wanting to know how good the diesel is?

Looking to go for a test drive this weekend.

Cheers

Not driven one but the Diesel is supposed to be pretty good.

It's worth having a look through to see other threads on this subject.

One major factor though is your usage.

The petrol FR will be quite thirsty and it is recommended to run 98RON petrol in it, which puts the cost up even more (although it will run fine on 95RON, with possible slight power/economy loss).

The diesel FR is much better on economy, but potentially has DPF issues, particually if you don't do regular long distances. There is a sticky on this in the FAQ section.

In some respects it boils down to your mileage. If you do low miles then the petrol is the better option, high miles then the diesel.

depends on the milage your going to do IMO

500 MILES will cost the following to cover:

£68 - DERV

£86 - PETROL

:)

I reckon with today's prices and using V-Power you're looking at over £100 to do 500 miles in the FR Petrol...

It all depends on how many miles you do.

Less than 10K a year and the cost differences become small enough to not be an issue imo, after all if you really wanted cheap motoring you'd buy a 1.4TDI Polo. Even the 170TDI isn't really that economical if you do a lot of miles and drive hard, my 150TDI Alfa used to average 35mpg. Most of the very high gas milage reports from TDI's are from long motorway journeys where even petrols return decent gas milage. Someone reported 400 motorway miles to a tank of gas from his Cupra on here a week or so ago.

I've just been through this dilemma and ended up returning to petrol after 4 years driving a TDI, I don't regret the change. I liked my TDI's motorway performance and range but otherwise the sound, vibration, power band and lack of available revs pushed me back to petrol. I'm sure a DPF wouldn't like my daily short journeys to the train station that much either.

So far I'm averaging 25-30mpg from my 200bhp TFSI and I'm actually finding it surprisingly economical for what it does, and its a simply gorgeous engine that puts a smile on my face whenever I drive it.

The TDI FR does sound quite tractorish to me, compared to the 118d I went in recently it's a bit rubbish.

I chose the FR TDI because, after driving both, the petrol car didn't have anything about which stood out to me. It was just quiet and smooth and nippy, but that was it. If I was going for pertol It would have to be the Cupra for the performance, or the ST for the noise.

The Derv FR however has that well known TDI kick which adds some interest to the drive. Its also better on fuel and cheaper to insure and tax compared to petrol equivilents.

That's why I went for it.

Like many have said all depends on mileage and your driving style... but i can assure you that if someone can get 400 motorway miles out of a Cupra (33mpg) then on the same trip, with the same right foot... im sure my TDI FR would do 55mpg+

Its all down to £££ at the end of the day, i would love a TFSI or even a Cupra... but i already spend £120 a month on Diesel, and there is no way i want to pay £200+ on Petrol and then more on insurance and Tax as well...

Unless you do very short trips (sorry smiler!) then you shouldnt have serious DPF problems...

I went from a big fast petrol car to the Leon as the cost was crippling me and believe me the TDI FR is NOT slow, the in gear acceleration is awesome...

I test drove a stylance 2.0 diesel and the next day the TDI FR and i was blown away with the performance so i suggest you test drive it for a day and decide for yourself...

For me its perfect cos i can cruise to work at 60ish and get 50mpg on the 35mile round trip, and when i want to have some fun.... i can )

Have fun deciding what to get, whichever it is im sure you wont be dissapointed!

Start it up and the diesel does sound like a tractor but get moving and most people can't tell the difference. I've had a few people ask whether its petrol or diesel. It has a bit of roar to it!!! It might not be as smooth as a BMW 118d but looks a damn sight better and isn't as expensive or badly equipped.

If it came down to it I would personally have a petrol but as I do 20-30,000 miles a year it was a no brainer. I have a mix of driving and return about 40mpg constant slog on the motorways and see about 40-42 ish! Also diesels generally have slightly better residuals but that may change.

As Spursmaddave says though the kick in the back as the turbo spools up is awesome and very addictive. Just don't expect to win that many traffic light grand prix's its on the road and through the corners where you will leave most standing. I followed a Vectra VXR down a windy A-road the other day and no matter how hard he tried he couldn't shake me off.

Sorry starting to ramble a bit now!!!!!

Diesel FR Owner of new 08 plate

Mine does not sound like a tractor, infact having owned 2 diesels previous to this one (Kia Sedona and a Kia Sorento - horrendous diesel sounds!) the FR is super quiet in comparison, infact sometimes I wonder myself if it really is a diesel FR! And as for speed - well put it this way, people do not know I'm driving a diesel FR when i race them...

The exhaust system sounds sweet...

Economical + Fun = Excellent.

I drive mine to work which is 1 hour and 30 mins, and I get no DPF problems, never have had, and have seen my car do 67+mpg - it does on average 45mpg when I thrash it!

So in answer to your question - YES, the diesel is brilliant!

67+mpg ... how do you do that?!
You beat me to it.... must have been downhill with a following gale force wind!

Absolute best i have ever seen is 55 on my 18 mile commute....

As for the tractor sound maybe when you start up yes, specially in the cold, but when you are on the motorway at 60-80 it is quieter than a petrol and dare i say more refined :p

"Strong, sporty looks, and very good fun to drive whilst returning excellent mpg! Comfy and robustly built in side too! A fantastic car for the cash!"

Couldn't have put it better myself, plenty of people have been shocked that it was well under 20k!

i love everything about my diesel fr

except the dpf, which sucks bigtime, but i aint going into it here, as i have said it in many other posts and a quick search will find that for ya.

i have no problem with sound, i went from a audi diesel, to my fr, and althought he audi has better sound unsolation against roadnoise, i cant here engine noise in either, and quite frankly couldnt giva a flying if i could. its quick, its economical, and i love it.

what does annoy me is the rattle, from the friggin stereo, but thats gonna get sorted under warranty......hopefully

Have a test drive in both petrol and diesel and I think you will be won over by the torque. The pull out of corners is awesome. 350Nm, that's more than the WRX Subaru's you keep tripping over.
