DMF or SMF?

Hi guys.

As Im sure some of you will know, I am in the hybrid process. Well, was in it, now I'm not, but am going back! Long story!

I don't think my DMF is gonna cope with the power I want to put through it as it was giving up under just the remap. Although that was as I used to drive the car wrong when I first got it and used to boot it under 2000rpm. :ban:

Now I've grown up alot and have learnt alot so take care of my car correctly!

So, I'm gonna be looking at around 220-250bhp and 370-390ft/lb I reckon.

CAN a DMF handle these torque figures if driven properly as I'd prefer this option! I dont want to go down the SMF route unless totally necessary!

Any feedback is good! Cheers!

I think you know the answer to this mate - it's just not the answer you want.

A DMF would proably last a little while but i have no doubt that it will begin to slip again.

At least with a SMF, you won't need to ***** around with the power. Yes it will rattle but that could be fun lol or just hold the clutch in.

Wouldn't a SMF, help revs pic up a little over a DMF?

All the above is true except the flywheel has no say in clutch slip - the clutch plate is what controls the slipping (or lack of it) - DMF is likely to start vibrating badly as it packs up quickly under that power, and eventually will just fall to pieces. Going to have to go SMF really for anything above 220 horses and high torque.

I know what you mean! :(

I've been looking at the new Carbonetic clutches! They've got a good read up in the latest Perfromance VW mag.

www.carbonetic.co.uk

I know sooty22 on here is running 230bhp and 277ish ft/lb with a DMF and it holds the power well!

So with a SMF, could you boot the power lower down? I wouldn't do anyway.

And Clone, with 230bhp and 380ft/lb - the revs would go up high enough as it was! :cartman:

I think a SMF is a must as soon as you start aming for over 350lbft.
As sed you can still us the DMF but will be changing it every fue k becuse it will fall apart.

When you talk about booting it under 2k its the clutch you would have to worrie about there.
Also as sed you gain form a SMF, it dusent give you power it just makes it easyer for the engine so less is wasted.

I learn so much from this forum :) Thanks for the correction. I'm ordering my clutch on Monday from awsome.

Let us know how much as my clutch is a concern. Running pd150 with custom code phase1.

Which did you decide on the flywheel, dual or single mass?

TA

I havent decided yet - I'll worry about that once I'm hybrid again!

I will let you know if they have replied to my email! :)

Also as said you gain from a SMF, it doesn't give you power it just makes it easier for the engine so less is wasted.

How do you think a single mass flywheel makes it "easier for the engine so less is wasted" ?

Iv'e just installed a South Bend stage 3 clutch and lightened SMF. My old DMF started to make chatering noises at idle, which is a sign its on it's way out. When I took the DMF out I could move the centre section independently of the out part! Haven't tried it out yet as the car is still missing the sub-frame, as I am changing other bits.....

SMF is the way to go with more power;)

Where are you buying your clutch from fella?

I wish Carbonetic would reply as their clutches seem to have had a good write up!

Look at it this way ....

Diesel 04 Tdi Leon worth approx £5500 ... to get 225bhp + £2000

Petrol 04 Cupra R worth now approx £6000 already has 225bhp

You tell me what the best value is if you want 225bhp which can go to 260 odd with just a remap.
