It seems from what I read most people switch to single mass flywheel/clutch set ups rather than stick with the DMF version. Does fitting a SMF require less labour than a DMF? OR is it just the price of the parts that make the difference? It seems DMF failures make most cars write-offs looking the prices to fix!! What's the point in them in the first place???

dmf's help reduce engine shake/rattle thats felt by the driver.

it also makes it smoother to engage with the clutch. however the downside is more moving parts means more chance of a failure.

i think smf's come into play when you want bigger power, and the moving parts of a DMF wouldnt last long.
 
The main point, and the one that people always miss, is that a dual mass flywheel damps a hell of a lot of transmission shocks that would normally be transmitted straight into the crankshaft. It's not a place to try to save a hundred quid or so, because a bust crankshaft will run you to far higher expense than the difference in price between a solid and a dual-mass flywheel.

Fitting a solid flywheel ALWAYS results in more vibration. If you can feel that vibration, so can your crankshaft. Don't do it. The engine internals on a tuned car aren't up to it.
