Do LCR Brake Pads need doing for MOT - Kwik Fit, National, ATS, DIY?

Hi,

Got MOT next week.

My front brake pads have just started squealing sometimes so I'm guessing even though the lights not on that they will need replacing.

Is it an MOT fail? From what I've read in MOT test documents they only check the brake efficiency, but I can imagine the test centre (free at Kwik Fit with Insurance so going there) saying they need doing n being awkward.

So, if they can be a fail, I need them doing pretty quick so would be better to go to a garage, but which will be cheapest and have them in stock?

Or do I get the pads from Brakesint.com (OEM are enough for me) and hope they get delivered quick enough for me to get them sorted before the test?

They do brake efficiency and you also need a minimum amount of pad material, they also inspect the condition of the discs i.e for corrosion.

Brake squeal might be that the back plates of the pads are dry or a build up of brake dust etc. So might just need strip and clean.

I'd imagine you'd only fail if these made the car not road worthy.

Usually if there low on friction material it'll be an advisory.

waiting on the indicator to tell you when the pads need changing is a dangerous game

Hello mate, Had my LCR in for an MOT last year and was told I needed pads even though it past the efficiency test and my dash brake light never came on. There is a minimum requirement for pad thickness so if they are down the best get them changed and prevent damage to your expensive discs.

Becareful taking your car to Kwick fit as will fill you with all kinds of bull, they will tell you that you need this and that needs doing to get your money. Thats why they get in with insurance companies and offer free MOT checks to get you in the door and hope you are gullable.

I had an Escort RS turbo which failed an MOT on rear brakes, basically one side was not efficient enough. Kwick fit were offering free brake checks so took it to them to find the fault, they told me the rear drums were below minimum requirement, the shoes were worn below minimum and a rear cylinder was leaking and quoted approx £250+vat. I knew the filling me with crap as had replaced both cylinders before MOT and were sound , the shoes had been replaced 6 month before and know they don't wear that quick. I was a CNC machinist at the time so later checked drums and shoes with micrometer and everything had plenty of meat on them. Anyway took my car to a brake specialist in end whom told me it was a rear compensator valve which had seized slightly, he sprayed with WD40(great stuff) and free'd it and brakes worked perfectly and eventually got my MOT cert.

Morale of the Story is dont go to kwick fit or becareful if u do, I personally would never go again!

regards

Steve

I wouldn't normally go to be honest, but the free MOT came with the Kwik Fit insurance lol.

Usually go to the National down the road cos they're good guys, fit my ARBs on the TDI and also fit me some tyres even though they're not meant to unless you buy them there! Also once took it to them cos I had a nail in my tyre, didn't take it out cos thought it'd make it worse so wen to them thinking it would be a puncture and they took tyre off and everything, found no hole and just said no charge, which I thought was nice as it costs money just to fit a tyre lol.
