If your buying from Halfords then i'd consider sticking to either the AutoGlym or Meguiars range of products for each stage you listed.

Its extra effort but claying is also well worth the time it takes between washing and polishing.

shampoo: Zymol very good and smells Fantastic

Clay set,or order Bilt Hamber clay on line as water lubricated.

wax. Farecla is getting good reviews or auto glym hd. I have lots of wax but am using only SRP* at the moment.

polish:* Autoglym Super Resin Polish (New Formula)

mitts: Lambs wool is best + 2 plastic buckets (google 2 bucket method)

sponge Keep it for the bath..

Auto glym glass cleaner great for glass and plastics.

wonder wheels purple coloured alloy cleaner

Meguiars tyre gel.

Visit Detailing World on line and be amazed at whats available. Also the above are good products I have tried most of the rest and sometimes the dearest are not much better. I would Imagine your Black Paintwork may have a lot of swirls in the paint these can be removed by machine Polisher for a glass like finish. But a good clean with the above will get you going another great site supplier is Polished Bliss worth a look.
Also on Detailing World their may be someone local to you that could advise you.
