A drilled airbox is usually mated with a perfomance panel filter.
It basically involves completely removing the airbox and drilling holes on the pre-filtered side of the box to aid airflow - usually the bottom of the airbox, and then refitting the airbox.
These holes are only worth putting in a place where they cannot suck up hot engine air, on my old Ibiza GTi I drilled the holes (10mm diameter) so that they faced the front of the car and the inner wing, no holes facing the engine. The benefits are slightly more induction noise and supposedly better air flow.
untested myself for flow but on part throttle its just like a standard car but on full you get the sounds/effect of the induction kit that most look for
plus benefits of being able to use a std or replacement panel filter as most ind kits are ok but are high maintenance - leave an ind kit to go dry/open for a year and you wont believe the damage it will cause
washed mines in the washing machine every 3 months or so and re-oiled afterwards.
drilling ur airbox will surely mess up the air/fuel ratio on cars and thus making them run leaner.
to check if ur car is running lean check ur spark plugs,
if they are nearly white - too lean
if they are nearly black - too rich
if they are nearly brown - should be ok
just allows more airflow to be available when required - air flow/density is measured after the filter still even seat designed an extra tank for the higher flow down by the chassis leg
depends how mad you go with the drill bit though i suppose
it wont run too lean as its before the sensor.. an airleak after the sensor would cause issues. it will just keep riching up the mixture until it can no more and light up the dash as the emissions go out the window
u can get pipercross induction kit dirt retention oil sprays. get em in most mod shops and also on net and halfrauds. got sum on friday from halfrauds for 8 quid but that was cos the box was suspiciously damaged ;-)
