Dual mass flywheel or clutch failure

My 2007 Freetrack tdi give my cause for concern a couple of weeks ago, I'd been on a trip "up north" in the rain and was on my way back when I stopped at a junction which was on a steep bank, all well up until that point, went to pull away, lots of revs but no forward movement, thought bugger the clutch had gone.Tried again, pulled away no problem.
Took it to my local garage who checked the bell housing to look for any moisture that could have caused the slip and they bled a bit of air from the system.I've had no problems since. The car has only done 50k which is a bit early for clutch issues(I hope), is it possible that the flywheel is at fault as I've read the horror stories that some have suffered. Is there a way to check it(DIY) or is it a garage job.I'd rather not have to fork out £1000+ for new flywheel and clutch. Thanks
