Electric folding wing mirrors

I bought my leon about 2 weeks ago and I didn't think I'd need folding mirrors but now I honestly do, I had my wing mirror kicked outwards and I'm afraid it could be worse next time. Is it possible to add this feature on now? I tried ringing dealers but no luck, they seemed to be very busy and kept me on hold for a very long time so I just gave up. So any helpful advice would be appreciated. Thanks

OK, This might help. I am thinking aloud here in a sense, so bear with me :)

Thought One:

To do this you're going to need mirrors with motors in them, which the standard ones will not have.

Then, you will need a replacement switch for the mirror control, as the folding thingy is on the switch.

In addition you might need more wiring from the mirror motors to the switch. Or, you may not. Depends on how they are wired in.

I assume all Leons have power mirror control - in that there is a little joystick on the driver's door that you flick to L or R and move around to move the mirror glass. On mine, which has heating and folding, the joystick swivels around into different places to allow to you select fold, right control, no control, left control and heating. Presumably on yours you have right control, nothing and left control.

From a building a car point of view, it would make most sense for the manufacturer to have one power / control feed to each mirror that controls the folding, heating and general moving around of the mirror glass. The control that actually determines whether your mirror can heat, fold or both would be actually in the mirror unit rather than on the car. All the switch does is decide which option you have selected.

IF that is the case on the Leon, then presumably there will be a socket-like connector within the mirror housing with a number of different pins on it to provide the power, heating and folding all from one wire.

A bit like this pic - which is from the Internet, not from a Leon :)

In other words, if you are lucky, then the supply from the switch on the drivers' door up to the mirrors will be universal across the range, and all you will need is a replacement switch and two replacement exterior mirrors.

In theory that would mean no new wiring, just mirrors and switch like I say.

Step 1. Unplug old switch. Plug in new switch.
Step 2. Take off old mirrors. Put on new mirrors.

And there you go.

The 'lock on fold' option would not work as that's a software type of thingy, but I cannot think of a reason why, if the wiring is there to support different switch/mirror combos, that a change to folding mirrors along with a folding mirror switch would not solve your problem.

It would be MIGHTY expensive though I would guess. Wouldn't surprise me if the switch was £20-odd, but the mirrors and all the gubbins could run into hundreds.

Although, that's not as expensive as having to have the door resprayed multiple times if someone bumps the mirror off leaving it swinging around in the wind. They say speculate to accumulate.... maybe speculate to save spending in this case.

Now, aaaallll of that said, you should be able to fold the mirror in by hand by giving it a good push towards the rear of the car. Might be tight at first but it should move (they will move forwards and backwards). So, could you do that instead?

I used to have to do that on my old Civic, cos that thing had mirrors which stuck out like Gary Lineker's ears :D

A decent dealer should be able to look up the mirror assembly on their parts lookup system, and see an exploded diagram of the relevant parts. If they find that the power cable TO the switch, and the cables between switch and mirror are common across all models then that is a good sign, cos it might just mean that my one-power-supply-to-do-all-things theory might work.

Thought Two:

Actually it may not be that simple.

You might have some sort of interior control unit as well, maybe in the doors or under the dash that is also involved along the line. But, again, same theory - why have multiple units with different features, just have one that can do everything, so long as the right pin is connected in the right socket etc...

Thought Three - and possibly worth a shot, as I think the dealer might just give you the 'nah mate, can't be done'.

Go here: http://www.hazzydayz.com/genuine-vw-folding-mirrors-1954-p.asp

Now, I know that's a VW mirror you see there. But, from the brief 2 mins that I just looked around the site, it looks like these guys might just have the know-how to advise you on your options. Maybe give em a call and see what they reckon. Fundamentally the Golf 7, Leon and A3 are the same basic car in terms of how stuff plugs into other stuff and so forth.

That Golf retrofit is about 50% more than even I - the ultimate pessimist - thought it would be though!
