Hey there

I know some of you folks have aftermarket touch-screen head units with navigation, and I also know that the large MFD display in the dashboard can display turn-by-turn navigation directions if enabled using VCDS or if the car came with a RNS head unit.

The thing is, I am buying a head unit which is not a RNS, it's actually sort of a clone that is specifically designed for CAN-BUS VW cars and of course it works 100% on the Leon and the buttons are all reddish just like the rest of the buttons on the dashboard are.

I saw a guy with a Leon who installed the very same head unit and everything functioned properly, including climatronic display, bluetooth, navigation, TV, and rear view camera. I was wondering, however, if navigation can actually be displayed on the MFD if you install a head unit that has GPS but is NOT an official RNS head unit by VW?

Thanks!

I have the Zenec NC2010 installed and the navigation was enabled through VCDS. When the guy tried to enable it, it came up with the message 'unable to connect with navigation' (or similar) but it was enabled afterwards. It displays slightly differently to the OEM units but still shows all the navigation instructions.

Thank you, Tim, that's great to know. So I am assuming it displayed that message once and then worked fine afterwards? By the way, did your car come equipped with Bluetooth? Mine did and since the head unit I am going to install also has Bluetooth, which one is the car going to use? I'd rather continue using the OEM Bluetooth because of the voice activation, OEM microphone and such, but at the same time dialing from the head unit and the larger display certainly would help. Any ideas on how these might work?

When the guy tried to activate the navigation through the MFD with VCDS, it was VCDS that gave that message. He thought it had failed but when he checked it afterwards, it was working and has worked great ever since.
My car didn't have bluetooth when I bought it. As you would effectively have 2 bluetooth systems, I would think that your phone would work with whichever unit you choose to pair it with. I don't think you could have it connected to both at the same time, probably cause distortion as it would be a double transmission.

Yeah most definitely, however since the OEM Bluetooth unit is connected to the head unit in my car (which is a normal RCD 310 with no BT on its own), how would that work with the new head unit? Well, I guess I am going to have to find out tomorrow.

Thanks for your information and help!
