Engine "chokes" in 2nd gear and higher, any ideas??

Ok here is the whole story incase it helps with any diagnosis...

I was driving around camden and hackney for quite a while, lots of sleeping policemen knackering my suspension leading it to start squeaking eventually (perhaps that bit is irrelevant but still annoying), then i got on the m4, (was a very hot day) going about 80 when a load of smoke came out of the exhaust (i think i may have heard something to but for my tunes) and then i lost a load of power, i pulled over and let the engine cool down a bit but when i started up i couldnt get above 1st gear as the engine would start choking if i went into second or higher..

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be and what i can do about it now ive been rescued back home?

Profile says your driving an FR TDI. Smoke indicates that a boost hose may have popped off. Is there a rushing sound in the engine bay if you rev it up in neutral? The lack of turbo pressure will mean that the engine overfuels and will be seriously down on power.

i revved it hard in neutral, it sounds fine, when i start the engine up and rev I can't tell anything is wrong, same as when i am in first...

Not really. Could be a blown turbo (but Id think that would be more obvious), turbo vanes sticking, or actuator stuck, or some sensor fault. I think you need a diagnostic reading done, either at a dealers or from VAG-COm or perhaps a code reader you can get from halfords for isntance.

can't get it in to the garage until saturday morning, crap, does anyone have any ideas, could it be something to do with the air *getting into the cylinders*? it just sounds like the engine is choking, why would it only do it in second gear and higher and not in first gear??

Maybe first gear as a boost limit, just a guess.

apparently it was the turbo pipes had become disconnected
