engine conversion

hi i got a seat leon mk2 1.9 stylance. i was wondering is it possible to do a full engine swap with a seat leon fr engine. can someone advise me on this. i really want a fr and i have found a fr tdi engine, gearbox, radiater and dials for just over a £1000. is it posible to change it

You would also need to tell your insurance otherwise your policy is invalid. At this point it would be cheaper to part ex your car in for a fr itself...
Insurance will probably be more on a car with an engine coversion, too, and worth less when you trade it in.

If you weren't going to tell your insurer, shame on you.
 
You'd need a full exhaust as well, dpf included which could put another grand on your bill, plus all of the labour costs to do the job. As above it probably would be more to insure your car modded as it would to insure a real FR.
 
Probably bought a stylance coz he can't get insured on an FR.

I know I'll just buy a styalnce and put an FR engine in it! Then my car will be sick innit bruv!
 
If you was not going to tell your insurance about it then why not go for the full spec and get a cupra engine and stick that in? lol

Not saying that he wouldnt declare it but it would have to be changed on the logbook which insurance would find out during a claim, am i right on that statement?

He's not said that he wouldn't declare it yet, so let's not jump to conclusions.

On the second point, I doubt someone who didn't inform the insurer would bother to inform the DVLA.

and to the OP, don't bother. Just get a real FR if that's what you want. The work and expense in the swap wouldn't be worth it, and you ruin any resale value. (Though it would be fun to do a RWD V8 conversion, and probably wouldn't cost that much more).
 
to everyone out their. yes i will tell me isurance company thats not a problem and yes i will also let dvla know thats not a problem. all i asked was is it possible to do it. yeah i can part ex my car and get an actual fr but were is the fun in that. so again is it possible to change it and is their anything else that i woud need lol
 
Betty, why would a FR perform better than a car with a FR engine in it? If he's getting the right exhaust system, suspension, etc. then I don't see a reason why it would perform any less? I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything I swear, and this is a serious question. Where I live we only have 1.6 MPi Leons and I have been considering getting a 1.4 TSi or 1.8 TSi/TFSi, whatever it's called, so I'd like to know why a 1.4 TSi Leon, for instance, would perform better if I install that engine in my car with a cat-back system, good camshaft, etc.?

It is possible to do an engine conversion as stated above and would need the exhaust/dpf system too.

Cost wise, unless you got the car really cheap in the first place then it would be best to have an FR to start with. You would encounter less problems in the long run and would enjoy the leon for what it is. Also the FR would look a million times better than the standard bumpers too unless you got the bumpers too

The FR has different (better) bumpers. And different suspension at the rear I believe.

If your only measure of performance is 0-60/ standing 1/4 or something like that, then I guess they'd be pretty similar.
 
I don't see why you'd want to drive around in a fake car :( its like the toyota mr2 to ferrari conversion kits...
I'd want the genuine article and not a fake one :confused:

Firstly I don't think it's anything like an mr2 to Ferrari conversion, that is trying to make a £1000 car look like a £100,000 car which I agree is silly and can be spotted a mile away. An engine swap is quite common among other marques like ford, vauxhall, honda etc, so why shouldn't seat be any different?
I agree in this instance it probably wouldn't be worth the aggro as I doubt a massive improvement would be seen from this swap considering the amount it would probably cost, a Cupra engine on the other hand would be a great conversion IMO, what a sleeper that would be!


This isn't a personal dig at anyone, but can we stop bashing people about insurance. We all know mods need to be declared and I'm sure the majority on here do, we could give people the benefit of the doubt, or a gentle reminder instead of assuming somebody is gonna break the law. Just my thoughts and no offence meant to anyone :)
 
Would also need the clocks from FR and electrics because of the Extra DPF sensors etc

I really can't see the point of taking a mk2 leon, and transplanting the engine from another mk2 leon into it. If you're going to do something like that, then put a motor that's not available in the leon in. Like the 3.2 V6, or the RS3 5-pot, or something that's not even a VAG engine.

Also, I don't think a low-spec car with a cupra engine would be that much of a sleeper. Until I had a leon I never noticed the difference between the FR/Cupra bumper and the normal one.
