Hi guys,

VAG-COM diagnosed my car and said I need a new engine coolant sensor. I have a 1.4 MPI and can't find the sensor.

Can anyone explain where it is please?? I have to pick the part up at 12:30 today.

Also, I have an option of two to choose from. is it the 2 or 4 pin one i need?

i would have guessed in the radiator? but change the fuses first because vag com will say its the sensor if the fuses are not giving it full voltage.

I have no idea where they are but out of interest, has your engine been cutting out ??

I've been wondering if my coolant sensor might be faulty because sometimes, just as the engine reaches operating temperature it cuts out.

No, mine doesnt cut out. Just gives ne problems starting when the cars warm.

the coolant sensors on most seats and vw are on the coolant hoses at the side of the engine block. just trace the coolant hoses until u see a sensor in the hose with a plug on and that should be the coolant temp sensor.

Banksy 1... where were you when I needed you most!! :)

I managed to find it on my own eventually, got the part and now its all sorted.
I cant believe the difference the new part has made, my care starts with no problems, it drives smoother and revs up quicker.

Even though your reply was to late, those directions to get there are spot on. I couldn't find the directions on her anywhere.

Thanks! ;)

Is it the front most pipe as you look at the engine block? the sensor looks a green colour where the plug goes in????

Is it easy? Do you have to drain all the water out of the system and refill it?

I'm gonna do mine ... and I've never picked up a spanner before!

Its an easy 5 minute job. Yes it is that green thing on the right hand side of the engine block.

There is a U clip that holds it in, this just slides out and you pull the sensor out. At this point coolant will be flushing out the hole, you need to put the new one in as you pull the old one out. If you do it quick enough you can get away with spilling about half a pint of coolant.

I had a real problem getting the part, Unipart Auto & Andrew Page were trying to give me a MK2 part even though I gave them my Reg and engine code.

Good Luck!

Thanks, I've got to go to the dealership to take my pollen filter back that I don't need [coz my car doesn't appear to have one in the first place!]

I'll get one there.
