Hey guys. So a few weeks ago coming on the motorway everything was ok. Then I stopped at a red light and car started sounding like a tractor in the engine area.
Havent used it since then. Today I went to start it to try and find out what it is and after the car warmed up black smoke would come out of the exhaust, idle is a bit rough as well. Any thoughts?
Leon cupra r mk1 with custom made exhaust is the car. Thanks buddys

Not sure about the black smoke, any lights on? When a coil pack died on me, it sounded like a tractor & ecp was flashing. I would get it scanned as this would tell you the fault. I'm sure someone here can be more helpful than me.

Thanks for the reply mate. I was told that by yhe sound could be the manifold. No lights on

Black smoke could be running very rich , so it could be down a cylinder , but if no lights on it needs to be scanned. Could be a cracked exhaust manifold does happen and would appear to not be uncommon, could also be your custom exhaust has a blow in it somewhere.

Sounds like the manifold. There's a fair bit of room down there, so when it's cold, try getting a mirror or your phone camera down there and see if you can see a crack.

Coil packs can fail and not throw codes strait away but you will feel and hear the misfire.
Sounds more like a lumpy NASCAR that’s had exhaust pulled off. Also may have more than one fail at once.
You really need it scanned for faults though if you can’t tell it’s dropped a pack.
AA RAC if you don’t have a code reader.
