ESP light on

Hi all,

I am new to this site and a new owner of a Seat Leon TDI FR.

I bought the car private about three weeks ago, the car was in mint condition and drove very well. The only concern with it was the ESP light was on. The seller said that she had not owned it long and she spoke to the garage that did the last service and they told her that the previous owner had the same problem, he told her that the cause was due to using low quality fuel from supermarkets and was a build up of bio. I didn't believe that this would cause the problem but took a chance anyway due to getting what I thought was a good price on it.

I spoke to the garage myself, and he did claim that the fault was a cause of using cheap diesel!! He also said that the previous owner had spoken to him and claimed to be experiencing the car going into limp mode, I have not experienced this myself and so far have done just under 300 miles.

I have since put it on a diagnostic machine and it has shown that it is the common fault the Seat's have, I think the code was 01458, G201 and a search on google shows that it is a fault with the abs control unit.

I have searched around and found the following options:

BBA Remanufacturing - they state they can sell the equivlant modified control unit that is vented and comes with a life time warranty - £220 excluding fitting.

Volkswerks, Middlesbrough - original replacement if half a unit £500 and full unit £1200 including fitting, comes with 12 months warranty. They qoute £250 to fit the above part.

Ron Turnbull, Middlesbrough - Repair unit £360

I have also been advised that I should be able to get a repair kit for about £150 not sure how much it will cost to fit.

What I'm after is what is the best option buy a modified control unit ro get the existing one repaired using a repair kit?

Thanks for taking the time to read

Nothing to do with diesel.

It's the G201 Pressure Sensor on the ABS Unit. Does the car carry full Seat History?

First three stamps were Seat, last three independant garage.

Will I have a leg to stand on to try and get Seat to cover costs?

Might also be worth calling these for a quote.

sinspeed.co.uk/blog/volkswagen-audi-common-abs-fault-brake-pressure-sender-sensor-switch-failure/

As for the garage telling you and the previous owner that supermarket fuel caused the ESP light to come on...:wtf:

I will give these a call tomorrow for a price?

Do you know how much I would pay to get it fitted?

Doubt it, but it's worth a call to Seat UK as technically is a common well known fault. Both mine and injector failed within 30 minutes of each other. Unlucky or what!

Very unlucky indeed!! I'm hoping it is just the one fault I have.

Although when I spoke to the garage who last serviced the car they said the previous owner mentioned they were having alot of problems with it like it going in limp mode.

Although she failed to tell me this.

I assumed she was trying to get rid of it quick as she probably got a qoute to fix the esp problem as over a grand.

ESP problem can be fixed for around £300 - £400 as its just a repair kit.

Limp mode shouldn't be that though, could be a host of things. Have injectors being replaced?

Don't think the injectors have been replaced. I haven't experienced this myself though, its just what the garage said. I've ran it for about 300 miles so hopefully I won't experience any issues with it.

hi,ive' just experianced this fault, after only owning the car less than 4 months i have had all the injectors and loom replaced and then only last week the esp light came on.Ring seat uk and voice your concern. They paid for the inj and wiring loom and contributed 50% towards the repair(not replace)of the abs unit. This was down to the fact that the car had full history even though it's now on 73,250 miles.
What they did say was because of the history and due to the miles it has covered they could only contribute this amount and normally wouldn't cover this?the cost in the end was £250.00 to me.
I rang round and local to me could get this repaired for £350.00 only downside being they sent the unit away for repair which meant being without the car for a week, but in the end i got seat to help.
In fairness to seat i have found them to be reasonably understanding so if iwere you i would at the very least give them a call.volksmaster in manchester do this repair also for around £400.00.
i certainly wouldn't expect to pay anymore than this.

As above really.

Posted - £300 + return post

In house - £400 all in

2 year warranty with the job done there and then using genuine parts with none of this external sensor fitting rubbish.

We remove them, repair them and refit them all within a 2 hour slot.

You also have to bare in mind now that if the new EU regs come in with the new mot rules then the ESP light will be an mot fail where as before it was a pass and advise.

Without exaggerating id say we've now done about 50 of these repairs with a 100% success rate and no come backs.

just spoken to Seat, they took details from me and will check to see if they can cover it under goodwill.

they asked for the service history, the first 3 stamps are seat the last 3 are an independent dealer. all services where done on time bar one which was done at 13 months and just under 20000 miles he seemed to query this and said this might affect them covering it.

i will see what they say tomorrow, fingers crossed they cover it.

if not guess i have 3 choices repair by volksmaster £300 plus about 150 fitting by local vw specialist garage
sinspeed, who state they modify an original seat part for 225 plus fitting
or bba remanufactured part also for 225

spoke to seat and they will not cover the costs, they said because i do not have full seat service history and i only bought the car 3 weeks ago so have no seat loyalty. although he has agreed for me to take my car in to get the investors inspectored to see if they are part of the faulty batch

we done a handful a month mainly because the dealers still want £500+ to do the same job

pretty wrong really if you ask me as something as important as the braking system or connected sytem should be covered as a recall not a warrenty issue and cost the end user nothing.

not surprise as service should be done every 10.000 miles not 20.000...
