I have a Leon Cupra, new, 2008 model (got it since August) and when I press the ESP OFF button on the central console the light in the dash, with the car sliding, doesn't stay on but it blinks and one of the systems, not sure which, still remains on! Is this normal? Can I do anything to stop all the traction control systems?

Thanks,
Paul Mailat

When you push the button the car with the skid marks should stay permenatly light as a warning that the ESP is disabled.

If it is not doing that, then you have a fault.

Yes, I know it should stay on, that's the problem. The thing is that ESP actually goes off but ASR or something stays on. And on the VAG-COM I get no error on any module. And it's been doing this since I got it from the dealer...

I brought up a similar thing with mine, if i press the eps button it just flashes on the dash even when not pushing or sat at lights etc. Not sure if it's a issue or an update etc?

Cheers,
Si

If I keep the button pressed nothing different happens. I held it pressed until my finger began to bleed and nothing happened! I checked again with the VAGCOM, still no error. Don't know what's the problem (if there is one) :(

Just had a look at my ESP in my Manual it states.

This program includes the ABS, EDL and TCS. The warning lamp has the following functions:

• It will light for about 2 seconds when the ignition is switched on while a test of the function is carried out.
• It flashes when the ESP is activated when driving.
• It will light up continuously if there is a malfunction in the ESP.
• It will light up continuously if the ESP is switched off.
• It will also come on if a fault should occur in the ABS because the ESP operates in conjunction with the ABS.

If the ESP warning lamp lights up and stays on after the engine is started, this may mean that the control system has temporarily switched off the ESP.
In this case the ESP can be reactivated by switching the ignition off and then on again. If the warning lamp goes out, this means the system is fully functional.

The Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) contains the electronic differential lock (EDL) and the traction control system (TCS). The ESP function works in
conjunction with the ABS. Both warning lamps will light up if the ESP or ABS systems are faulty. The ESP is started automatically when the engine is started.
In specific circumstances where you require less traction, you can switch off the ESP by pressing button fig. 131 .

For example:

• when driving with snow chains,
• when driving in deep snow or on loose surfaces
• when rocking the vehicle backwards and forwards to free it from mud, for example.

You should press the button to switch the ESP back on when you no longer need wheel spin. The TCS and EDL are also switched off if the ESP is switched off. That is to say,
these systems are not available while ESP is not activated. When does the button light up or flash?

• It lights up when the ignition is switched on and should go out again after about 2 seconds.
• It will start flashing to indicate that ESP is counteracting an unstable driving condition.
• It will light up continuously if there is a malfunction in the ESP.
• It will light up continuously if the ESP is switched off.

sounds like some sort of fault. best get it checked out with a dealer.

Yup, it does sound like it's a problem. I will check it out. A friend told me that if the car battery empties (and it could happen during transport) the ESP will have a fault and that won't go away until I don't know what the dealer does. I deffo don't have any errors on the ECU, I just VAGCOM-ed it and it's all clear, no errors anywhere. So, could be some setting that can be changed in the ESP module...

so will that light come on if my tyre pressure drops and need to but some air in the tyres i take it?

Not necessarily.

If there is a significant drop in pressure then yes, I had this when I had a puncture the tyre with a screw in it was down to about 12 PSI.

Tyres normally have a slight drop in pressure over time and I don't think this would be picked up. Some of my tyres were down to 25 PSI and it hadn't told me about those.

Ok, went to the dealer, told him about the ESP problem and this is what he said: " The new 2009 model has a protection on the ESP module and you can only deactivate ASR and EDL. ESP stays on at all times." A friend of mine who works there told me he can make it deactivate but unofficially, meaning not at the dealer service.

This has *ALWAYS* been the case, ESP is always on in the background in case you get too far out of control..... it will allow you to go so far, but then will always cut in when it thinks your about to kill yourself :D

The light however will illuminate on the dashboard when you press the ESP button and stay lit until you re-start the car OR press the ESP button again. If you press it and the light flashes and goes out again, then as stated above, its a fault.

Not really... On my '06 FR TFSI the ESP went completely off when pressing the button. I went on different tracks with it and the bloody thing didn't do anything. And it has seen some rough times :p And the ESP light on the dash stood lit, unlike in my 09 Cupra that blinks continuously at a few seconds interval once I press the button.

my new fr blinks when i try to switch off the tc or esp. Bit annoying really, it is too distracting to use at speed. perhaps this is the nanny manufacturers making a point.
