experiences with the 2.0l tdi engine

hey, i'm looking out for a new car lately, and I've come a cross a 2008 leon (yellow ofcourse) 2.0tdi, now I've heard that these engines weren't good... but what are your experiences with it...

pro's and con's ;)

It depends what you mean by good/bad? In terms of power output and ability to get more power out of it using a map hybrid turbo etc... and combined with MPG its a superb engine. Even when you ignore the odd issue with the DPF on the 170 the torque and oomph it gives is extremely good for a 2.0l inline 4. Apart from the DPF issues I'm also not aware of it being unreliable in any way?

The engines aren't bad at all - I switched from a 300bhp 350z to a Leon TDi FR and was reluctant to do so initially. Although it's amazingly cheaper to run/insure/tax, I couldn't help referring to the 'on paper stats' and how I'd be losing 3 seconds from 0-60.

I admit that the low end torque compared to the 350 is not on the same planet (but it's a completely different animal and shouldn't be compared), but once you hit the turbo range, it's a complete beast!

The DPF issue with the FR is a good reason to to take the standard 2.0 TDi but this largley depends on the mileage you'll be putting in and how much of that is on the open road (ie motorway). It only took a week of town driving to trigger the dpf warning light (and soon after limp mode) on mine.

The 140ps will easily remap to the 170ps of the FR for about £300 and you can avoid any issues with the DPF.
Or, if you have around £800 left in your budget, you could have the DPF bypassed and mapped to around 220-240Bhp - not bad for a diesel!

I haven't heard of any serious reliability issues either - these forums are the best place to spot issues and evaluate your choice before purchase.

All in all, it's a fine car.

yes, it's the 140ps version without dpf, never want a DPF again in my life:blink:
in belgium it's actually the 136ps version because it cuts registration costs in half (limit is 136ps, otherwise double the registration cost)
I drive between 45000-50000km a year now in my current 1.4tdi ibiza ecomotive, so i'm looking for something heavier (and more powerfull)...

I know some of the cylinder heads (year 2007) in the A3 were prone to crack and lot of them have been replaced under warranty.

I suppose problem is solved by now.

The engine gets a little bit of abuse in the motoring press now that the Common Rail version is out - the old PD unit sounds a little agricultural compared to this new engine - that's all really

dude, not so serieus :p

PD are acient,but I still love my little 1.4tdi with pd but it makes a lot of noise compared to a co-worker his 1.6 CTDI, damn it's silent, I had to ask if it was a gasoline or a diesel

The thing with the PD engines are that they can be tuned further than CR diesels. A lot of tuners are saying that they won't be able to get as much power from a CR diesel as a PD diesel. Fair enough straight maps are similiar(even for remaps some quote 5bhp less for CR than PD), but once you start going to stage 2 above the PD will come out on top. Maybe down to the tolerances of the common rail injector system.
If you looking for a smooth and quiet engine the CR engine wins hands down. When cold my car sounds like a tractor, but i love it for it's character. Don't get me wrong CR diesels are the way forward and only time will let them catch up and surpass the PD diesels in the tuning scene.

Notice the increase in torque over the CR for the PD engine!!

I really dont think you should be getting wheel spin in 4th either unless its very icy or ur tyres are shot at.
