I think the prospect of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals and a meadal table to determine the world champion is an 'interesting proposal' by Bernie

What I found very interesting is the idea of how the last 50 years of F1 would have changed if the rules were retrospectively applied....things would have been very different especially for British drivers.

I think in future we can only hope Bernie's time is taken up wrangling with divorce lawyers, then we may be saved from any more 'good ideas'

The most recent example is this year, when runner-up Felipe Massa won six races compared with Lewis Hamilton's five. Under Ecclestone's proposed regime, the Brazilian would now be 2008 world champion.

i was just thinking why that idea came about

i dont like this idea too much.
It is interesting however how Lewis 'deserved the title this year'. Ok he did win, and well done to him a fantastic achievement. But in terms of deserving Massa surely was let down significantly with things out of his control in comparison, an engine blow up when leading a race and the fuel pipe issue meant a potential points swing of 20 points or so...
Lewis is yet to have DNF for technical reasons for nearly 2 years? (well done McLaren).

but anyway, the old system of points, when Prost Senna Mansell were around is a very good compromise. This worked by having 16 races, but you enter your best 12 scores... (im not 100% sure on the exact numbers..)
But this did mean that risks were rewarded, as if it went wrong you didnt get overly penalised. Then also towards the end of the season, you could start a race thinking 'only a top 3 finish is worth anything' so if you were 4th / 5th you gave it a go.

The current system rewards consistency and reliability which is a boring approach.

Qualifying should be changed also. My suggestion would be to return to the old system of an hour session and all cars qualify for the whole hour. But, in order to get racing throughout the hour your time is a combination of your 3 best times, each set in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd 20 minute sections.

I would also ban refuelling as well adjustments to diffs and brake balances etc during a lap. One set up for the entire circuit. This would lead to some compromise in set up and how this also matches the fuel levels. Different cars would be quicker at different stages of the race and different parts of the circuit.

The current system of refuelling and set up adjustments on the move leads to a more consistent pace during a race, so once the cars are in order of speed, (and lets face it thats what qualifying is) then not alot is going to happen.

I think they should all have to sprint to their cars at the start like they did in the olden days

i have heard from many sources, that it's going back to the BBC so they can take charge of the new scoring system.

I think this is potentially the most stupid change ever for Formula One in recent years. All that was needed was a revision of the current points system with an increase in the gaps between 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. I guess we'll see next year but hopefully it'll fall flat on it's face.

This idea sucks.

In and 18 race season, should a driver win half the races, he could probably go home and put his feet up for the rest of the season, not bother turning up at all for the rest of the season, knowing that its highly unlikely for another driver to equal his gold medal haul, and he would be an armchair world champ.

Then the driver who comes secong could have a mixture of 18 medals, golds, silvers and bronzes, and just be the best loser.

i can understand why we wants to change the system, if someone finishes 2nd 3rd 4th at every grand prix will beat someone who finished first at every other gprix. Which does not encourage risk taking or overtaking.

However, thats really down to the scoring system, especially since they have given points to the top 8. The difference between points for first and 2nd or 3rd is not as significant as it used to be. I think a second place finish and a 3rd place finish used to be just one 1st place finish.. but now a second and third place would be 14 points and one 1st place would be 10 points! thats a massive change.
Add in rules about engine and gearbox changes...
the fact that ALL races count..
Is anyone surprised at all that there is no overtaking!?

Reducing the number of places awarded points would be bad for the lower teams and so id stick with the top 8.

So i would either let all drivers drop their 3/4 lowest scores from the season, (contructors could stay as all races) or change the points system to reward 1st place or podium places more.
But not exclusively to podium finishes.

ahh but to finish first - first you have to finish

we'll end up with cars making off in to the distance and anything 4th and below giving up at halfway point to save the engines

so even less chance of seeing any overtaking then

more often now do you see a scrap for the last few points going on around 5th+6th place etc - with medals system being used you are gonna get nowt
