Took the car into seat this week over a noise i was hearing when changing low gears. sound like a rattle and a clap or tap noise. Very annoying and makes youv wince and try to be really gentle.

Turns out its the gear selector. The guy popped the bonnet and twiddled somthin which made the gears engage and that familiar noise again. He told me it wasnt serious and there wasnt much they could do but told me to keep an eye on it.

The noise is more of an annoyance because it sounds like a rite bag of spanners when changing in 1st 2nd and 3rd. Obviously though i wanna make sure warrant work is sorted before it escalates and i dont end up forking out later on. Am i being fobbed off? any known faults in this area? No other cars iv heard make thisvnoisevso obviously its not normal!!!

Any advice would be a big help!

I think you're being fobbed off. The gear selector is a shaft that fits into the gearbox from the top and can be changed without removing the gearbox, just removing the engine cover and air filter. If he was fiddling with it under the bonnet, it was probably this and not the connecting rods from the gear lever. A second opinion would be advisable.

When this part moves downwards, it makes the noise. It doesnt do it if you let off VERY slowly to a point when youll probably have to gear down! Or when you hold the revs slightly but i only tried this once for obvious reasons.

So what would be my plan of action? Different dealer?? Or just tell them its got worse?

Ps sorry for my poo grammar on my previous post, touchscreen lol.

I would be inclined to go back to the same dealer, they asked you to keep an eye on it, tell them it's got worse. If they still decline to do anything about it, ask them to be more specific about their reasons.

If another dealer is within access, try them as well and see what their diagnosis is. Failing that, try Customer Services at SEAT, it's still under warranty.
