Hello,

Someone has feedback on this dampers?

Sachs Super Touring

Front 314 717
Rear 310978

Thanks

I can only comment on what I used to replace the rear dampers on my wife's 2002 Polo, it and probably her new August 2015 Polo and the late 2009 Ibiza all probably were assembled using Sachs rear dampers, it was these ones that I fitted to replace the original dampers when they started to leak on the 2002 Polo. It was probably these dampers that I fitted to the front of the late 2009 Ibiza, but I don't think that VW or SEAT ever used Sachs dampers on the front, like you found on your car, the size/shape of the holes in the lower spring cup surround are different on what was fitted at factory when compared with new Sachs from ECP. I think that Super Tourer might just be the standard after market version. That late 2009 Ibiza 1.4 SC has rear "sports suspension" but normal front suspension, I can't say why but that does seem to be what SEAT fitted to these SC versions of Ibiza.

Edit:- when/if the time comes to replace the rear dampers on that late 2009 Ibiza, I'll be fitting the sports version of the Sachs dampers that ECP sell. It might be that all SC just have sports rear dampers and correct "load" rear springs?

according to sachs website, the ones I bought for the back 310978 can be used for both sports and standard suspension, so thats probably covered.

I think SEAT uses monroe as OEM.

I don't know what you mean with different, are they incompatible? what did you install on your 2009 ibiza at the front?

I had not considered Monroe for the front dampers.

I requested a full "CAR DATA" listing from a SEAT dealership, for that car by giving them its VIN, the "CAR DATA" printout that I was given, listed a PR code that means "rear dampers sports suspension" while I think, the rear springs are just normal for that axle weight.

Also ECP lists different rear dampers for "sports chassis" and "non sports chassis" - it is a long time since I have checked up on the Sachs website for damper type stuff.

Edit:- I think that that on line VWG parts cat listing that we tend to use also lists two different damper numbers for sport and non sport chassis.

Another Edit:- I would need to check if the PR code was UB9 or not, if not, then as you say, the damper would be the same for both sport and non sport. That is the first time that I've seen that written. Prior to this I had only seen or noticed the one rear damper for sport chassis and another rear damper for non sport chassis!

Yet another Edit:- yes, I fitted 314 717 at the front, I've just checked one of the boxes!

Pfff while trying to check the part number for the rear dampers I find out they are not original so... what a waste of money I bought new ones.... can I keep them without assemblying them to change in three years or so?

I should had just focused on the front where I have one damper with 141.000kms and another with 30.000kms which translate in an odd behaviour of the front.

Quite a few people rate that make of damper higher than Sachs etc, especially on the Skoda Fabia forums.
They are cheaper but yes I know they are good, but I thought they were still original...
I want to replace the frot ones because one of them makes noise and they are not the same mileage, I notice the right side goes down more.

Now I dont know what to do about the rear!!!

They costed 68€... maybe I will replace anyway... I have no idea how old they are...

Quoted from CAR DATA printout:- "UB1 = REAR SHOCK ABSORP FOR SPORTS DESIGN"

So maybe standard damper will be okay for that late 2009 Ibiza SC after all, if it ever needs them!

Normally these dampers will be getting replaced due to one of them starting to leak oil, though depending on how much longer you intend to keep that car, it might just be worth while replacing them as you have bought the new ones?

Hi just received my car and was doing a check.

Is something missing here?

A retaining clip?

There should be a retaining spring clip/wedge thing on the other side of these brake pipes. (the other side of that bracket that the metal sleeve of the brake pipes pass through)

It is okay that the section of flexible brake pipes with a rubber sleeve on them does not fit into the bracket beside it - that seems to have been solved on later versions, for instance, my wife's 2015 6C Polo has these pipes inside that bracket as intended I'd guess, maybe they now have slightly longer brake pipes than early versions. (you can see the bracket and rubber sleeve on your second picture)

Did that garage comment on any issues with the steering, like stiffness etc?

I commented with them and they say it was normal. He has in a hurry with a lot of work so I doubt he had time check.
But yes, yesterday it was normal, dont know if it was the dampers, hope it is, I just wake up and will try it now.
Seems to be lighter a lot more times in the past month, so probably the problem is fadding very verty slowly, like another person I meet in a portuguese forum that had exaclly the same symptoms in a 2009 vw polo, after a pump change, steering lighter cold and harder to turn after driving a while, he had the same nightmare because no one would also find the probem, and the problem started to go away after 9000kms/9 months, but I passed that mark ling time ago

What makes this difficult to diagnose is that when the car is inside a building like a garage with lower temperatures the steering gets normal.

The rubber thing was my second question.

By the way Im curious, whats your opinion on the sachs dampers? Harder or softer than OEM?

I can't really say how the Sachs front dampers feel when compared with the original ones, the ride height of the car might now be higher due to fitting Sachs re-branded front springs at the same time. The late 2009 Ibiza that I used to drive (my oldest daughter is now back in UK and so I don't get near it), always felt okay as it is very light and has 17" wheels with 215/40 XL tyres.

After investigating I think sachs produces the OEM shocks, just curious about if they are the same.

Yes they do tend to be what SEAT and VW use on the rear of Ibiza and Polo, and the ones that you have bought should be near enough the same as what was fitted in the factory but as always things will have moved on, though Sachs have been using that "line" or name of damper versions for quite a long time as that was what I found on their website when I was looking for new dampers for my wife's previous 2002 VW Polo 1.4 16V SE.

Edit:- also I think that the VW Group part numbers shown on these dampers might be for a complete assembly - ie include the dust cover, so don't worry if what is printed on that ebay listing is not what SEAT parts list calls up, I was going to say "as on your old dampers", but that will not work for you!

Another Edit:- you would think that that label, as it is only for identifying parts picking for an assembly line, might even cover that pre-assembled damper ready to fit to the car, ie a part number that does not exist in the official parts listing that a dealer would use.

This is what I can see, which leaves me apreensive about what I cant see :(

I've forgotten how angustiating it is to deliver your car to garages... but I don't have the tools and space to do this, and at a self service garage I would end up paying more because I would take a lonnggg time to do this...

One of the two missing and the other broken:

Both are broken like this and one of them was above the steering pump:

Brake line retainer missing and it was out of the place (Im the one who put it there):

btw for the brake line clip to fit it should go inside more, correct? This is the right tyre.

Also I dont see anything wrong but just to make sure do you see something done wrong here?

PS: Steering is still normal today, but I have yet to have it aligned monday as the tie rods were replaced, the cars stays in a straight line though.

I have a squeaky noise going over bumps, I already had it when it rains, today I washed the car so could be that. Did you ever notice that?
