Hi all :) So still very much enjoying my Leon, took it for only its second fuel up the other day (440 miles off of this tank and only barely hit the red so pleased!), and stumbled across a problem.

I start filling, it does 50p worth of fuel and then "click", fuel cuts out. I think...well that's odd, take it out and put it back in, start fuelling again, this time gets to about £2 before "click", repeat several times till I hit £10, I put the pump down, start the electrics and sure enough the fuel is going in fine, no problems.

So I go inside to pay (As it won't let me use the pump now I've put it down), with the intention of doing the shopping and going back in for a second attempt. I ask the girl on the counter and she says "Try holding it at a different angle", claiming that some angles cause the fuel to splash back and hit the sensor or something.

So after the shopping I go back and use the same pump as the first time I filled up (With no problems), and sure enough "click...click...click", it's doing it again. I try various different angles until eventually I find one where it fuels. I get to about £62 (Which, with the original £10, would normally fill it up) and start to worry that the angle I'm holding it at will stop it from cutting the fuel out, and that I'll eventually end up spilling diesel all over myself.

So this brings me to 2 questions:
1. Has anybody else experienced the same problem? I was at a Tesco who have annoying rubber flaps on the diesel pumps that make them difficult to put in.
2. Given the above info, will the sensor still cut off fuel even though I'm holding it at the awkward angle?

Thanks :)

Ha, not just me.

Had mine for 9 months now, but the first day, first fill up (Esso) I could only get £6 before I gave up and tried a different garage. Not sure why this happens. My guess was the sensor gets too close to an edge or an anti-theft device maybe .

My process is start filling up, if it clicks pull the pump out about an inch and start filling again. That normally works for me. 9 months on I hardly get anymore premature clicking.

Hope that helps, and don’t worry you’ll figure out the right distance and angel :).

Hi peeps:)yea same here just got my mk2 few weeks ago went 2 fill up as (garage I bought it from hadn't put any in)put pump nozzle in&it kept cutting out eventually managed by just squeezing a bit at a time took about 10 mins 2 put in £10 so if anyone knows how 2 get it 2 fill up proper cos if I go a long way it's gonna take forever to fill up:shrug:!!

Filling American cars does the same thing, I find pinching the hose into an "n" in the left hand while filling with the right hand helps slow the flow rate (as it is the flow sensor in the fuel pump that clicks it off as if your tank is full).

Kinda worked it out filled up £20 other day&had 2 pull up wi filler away from pump (stretch hose over hatch)holding nozzle about 10 on clock face it fill'd without cutting out :)took usual few mins but nozzle don't go all way in:shrug:

Sorry, meant to post back when I saw new posts. I've now found that putting the pump in, and then rotating it 90 degrees clockwise (So the tube is going off to the left) stops the supply from tripping out, hope this helps someone :)!

Not had a problem filling up but since putting the nozzle so that the metal ridge on the nozzle sits resting just inside the fuel filler rim it has never cut once on any pump ive been to :)
