Just go the the same garage over and over - eventually you'll get to know the tester! I know what you mean though - I've recently changed the garage I use for MOTs because the old tester has retired and been replaced with a miserable w**ker who always finds something really petty to fail my car on... (for example, a club sticker within the swept arc of the wiper, or sidelights not the correct shade of white)
Do a google search for council MOT testing stations. They do not carry out any remedial work so will not profit from making up Halfraud-type failures. You will get an honest evaluation of your car and not get ripped off
You probably want to find a VAG tuning garage or similar that will actually take an interest in the car itself rather than just the process of the MOT.
Luckily in Essex there are a few VAG places that offer a great service and advice.
