Front brake disc and pad

Hi guys,

I own a 12 plate Ibiza 1.4 16v, it has done 28k miles since my ownership in Feb 2013 and a total mileage of 41k so far. I was told in my first MOT (and also in a free vehicle check with AC a few weeks before the MOT) that I need my front brake disc and pad replaced soon as the discs are lipped. The quote I got from AC is 200 quids all inclusive and the one on the SEAT website is nearly 260 quids. Just wondering how much would this cost if I get the parts myself and find a garage to do it. Is there a particular size/configuration that I should look out for if I were to source things myself?

Any input would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
L

Changing discs and pads is probably one of the simplest DIY jobs apart from wiper blades and air filters. However, you must be 100% sure that you know what you are doing and have the right tools.

1. The 100% DIY route will save you the garage labout cost - ie £60 to £120, depending upon where you go. Main dealers are hilariously expensive for this sort of work - avoid!

2. Absolutely ANY garage could do this work - phone around and ask for a price.

3. Don't buy the parts and then get a garage to fit them. If they get the wrong parts, it is their problem; if you get the wrong parts, it is your problem.

4. You don't have to fit genuine SEAT parts, good quality after-market parts are OK.

5. It is a good idea to change the brake fluid when the car is 3 years old and should be cheaper if you do this at the same time as the discs & pads. Fluid change should be about £50 at most, probably less.

Hope that helps,

David

Cheers David. I was looking up for the parts on the internet, did get a little bit confusing when I was faced with all the different sizes/hole numbers. Probably a better idea to get someone to do it for me instead of risking myself screwing things up. I shall go and check with my local garages and see what they charge.

Just dug out the receipt for the front dics and pads I had done last June, all prices include VAT:

Labour (1hr 20mins) = 78.00
Pads (pack of 4) = 31.50
Discs (2) = 60.50

TOTAL = £170.00

That's for a 2011 1.2TSi Ibiza, new shape, pre-facelift. I used an independant VAG 'specialist' guy just outside Milton Keynes - let me know if you want his details.

All the best,

David

Thanks again, thats very helpful, Milton Keynes is a bit out the way for me unfortunately. Regarding choosing what sort of garage to go for, what is the difference of getting it done with a vag specialist?

Not much for this sort of job, but an independant VAG garage would have all the kit for reading the car diagnostics and probably specialist tools for other jobs. My local specialist trained on VAG cars and probably knows more about VAG than the usual jobbing car mechanic.

For me, one advantage is that I get to talk to the guy who is actually doing the work, not some 'Tracey' on 'service reception'. I'm sure there will be people on here who could recommend a decent garage in your area if you give us some idea where you are located.

Just dont go to KwikFit though !

Well I did say 'take it to a garage', which somewhat precludes Kwikfit ;)

There are those of us that still remember the 'Nothing thicker than a Kwikfit fitter' sketch :)

Cheers guys. I stay in Dumfries, but I do go up to Glasgow often enough that I can get it done there as well. Managed to get a few quotes, surprisingly some of them quoted me something even more than the one I received from AC.

I bought Pagid pads from Euro car parts and my local garage charged £30 to fit - I don't think they'd charge much more to fit discs too

Cheers guys. Yeh was looking into similar websites as well, but decided to get the garage to sort it all out for me this time round, as I have other stuffs that I need to attend to at the moment. Will hopefully try doing it myself in the future.
