Front fog lights

Hi Everyone

I was wanting to use my front fog lights with high beam only. Is there a way to do this with a diagnostic tool or would it be a case of doing something with the wireing? The result i am looking for is basicly to use them as driving lights. This means i could use them legally. I believe the laws are they must only come on with the high beam and go off with low beam. I dont have a lot of knowlage so any help would be great. Thanks

Your fog lights are not configured as driving lights. They produce a low, flat and diffuse illumination so you can see the edges of the road for a short distance ahead without producing the white-out effect of headlight beams reflecting back from the fog droplets.

Driving lights, that is, auxiliary main beam headlamps, must, as you say, only come on when main beam is selected and go off when main beam is switched off.

Doing this will make your foglights useless in fog and they are no good as driving lights, unless you're planning to fit projector headlamps in their place. If so, they must be adjustable with the vehicle stationary (the foglamps aren't because they don't emit a directional beam).

The lights are all connected to power by physical switches. You'd have to connect the foglight power lead to the main beam tab on the steering column switch. The foglights are fused before the switch, wheras the main beam bulbs are fused after the switch, so you'd lose the foglight fuse, unless you did some more complex rewiring.

Ah ok. That sounds a bit complicated really. I was thinking of changing the light unit but was hoping it was a case of splicing the wire in at the column.
Might have a think about it though as the foglights hardly get used at all
Thanks for the input though

Why would you have driving lights connected to main beam ?

So your going to be driving along with all your lights on ? That'll p*ss a few ppl off lol

What do you mean by driving lights ? 1's that stay on all the time ?

"Driving Lights" are auxiliary full-beam headlamps. They used to be very popular in the pretend-I'm-a-rally-car set. They are a good way of putting more light down the road so you can see better.

The fog lamp positions are not a good place to put driving lights, too close to the road and too small. You could just about get a projector headlight in the space, with a bit of work.

Then, as you say, there is the knee-jerk reaction to seeing someone approach with foglamps on on a clear night.
