Gear box probkem

Hi all

I am a newbie and know as much about cars as my missus does Battlefield 1942.

So here goes.....

When I select 5th gear it jumps out of Gear, I recently travelled to Scotland and by the time I got back I had to wedge my knee between the seat and gear stick to keep it in gear.

And there was a constant knock feeling and sound, and this only happens when I accelerate, doesn't happen when idling or cruising in gear.

Any ideas peeps..... remember I am not only a newbie but a mechanical numpty as well.

car is a 1.4 Ibiza P reg, not sure of where to find gearbox code etc etc

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers peeps

apart from terminal illness inside the box i'd suggest making sure the selector cables are all good

might be worth tweaking it a bit as it might be too far left or back hindering it from locating all the way in

iirc most of the boxes have a central lug you can peg the gearchange in to adjust it but really a 2 man job to make it easy

:fingers crossed:

Erm think I got lost when you mentioned cables........ I thought gearboxes had direct linkages.... and that is only cos I heard someone say that... don't know what he meant but hey I am just a numpty :(

its a 1.4 like mine, its a rod, or should be, my friends golf does this in reverse. i believe (read it on here) that it could very well be an engine mount, i would imagine the gearbox mount.

im not great at finding solutions, just causing them lol and for all we know ur missus might just be playing you with her knollege of bf 1942 lol, when ur in bed she is building up your rank :p lol

easy solution is to make some thing out of wood, to go from your handbrake to where 5th gear is, then it will hold it there lol no need to use your knee

How would I know if the rods cables or whatever or right or wrong..... sorry maybe I should just get some back street bodger to have a look and suck between his teeth and roll £ signs in his eyes

Just one point when I wedged the gear stick, it felt as if ...... well sounds silly but the gear stick rhythmically knocked, not that I know but if felt similar to a cog missing teeth then reconnects so every time someting rotates you feel the knock, and it eminated from the gearbox.

Sorry i am a total numpty but willing to learn.

lol, you could be right, have u been grinding it into gear??? i no the golf was done by owner trying to do a reverse J turn lol so might have grinded a few teeth out of the sprocket(cog)

but before you even think about buying a new or getting ur box fixed, i would check everything else first. as the box is probably the most exsensive standard part for the car lol
