Gear changes in the FR/Boc

Hi, i test drove the new FR a couple of months ago because the garage i went to in milton keynes had already sold their demonstrator boc :(

After test driving the car up and down the dual carriage ways in MK i liked it so much, and really wanted the bocanegra I decided to order one knowing that it could only be better than the FR BUT... the only problem i found with it was that when using the flappy paddles to change gears it took about a second 2 change gear...?

Is this with all FRs? and isit the same in the bocanegra?

I didn't notice it taking that long on my test drive. It is slightly longer when the correct cog isn't pre selected. In sport and drive mode the second gear is already lined up ready to go which is why its nearly seamless.

I actually noticed the same when I test drove the boca here in London. When you try and chase it to the red line and change it almost over revs as the change time is not as quick as you would seem. The dealer said it could just be the box so I am hoping that is the case. I wouldn't like the idea of being told I am over revving the car all the time coz the box is not changing as quickly as it should.

It depends on your throttle usage, if in 'D' you are just gently cruising along it will change gear as soon as possible to save fuel, i.e. economical. But if you push it to the floor it will rev all the way up and leave the gear change as late as possible. even if you push the pedal to half throttle it will extend the revs to 3 to 5 thousand to give you a bit more push. Very clever.

In Sport, which I haven't used much, it will rev all the way up to the red line, but the gear change won't be as smooth because the engine is going from 6,500rpm to 7,000rpm all the way down to 2 or 3,000 rpm, there has to be a moment when the second clutch engages a little easier so as not to damage the engine or clutch. So a gear change won't be like the usual smooth seemless change it usually is.

Hope I'm near enough correct and not acting like a clown. I usually just drive in D, I only use Sport for when I'm overtaking, cos this car will drink the juice quite easily.

Doesn't it adapt to your driving style?

Exactly, which is why a test drive isnt really a fair test.

Also depends on how you have been driving. Mine seemed a bit lazy but after a 200 mile blast down to Milton Keynes and back today its sharpened right back up again.

Ohhh right, i see what you mean techie because obviously i only drove the car for half an hour or so, herefore didnt get a true experiment with it. I suppose i will only find out when i get my boca.

I get what you guys are saying though.
Its going to take soem getting used to going from a manual to a semi automatic.

I second that mate. For a man who has only had manuals all his life this will be a massive adjustment for me too hahahahahahaa.

You wont know what to do with your left leg!

We'll have to learn how to left foot brake! I hope accelerating and braking at the same time doesn't cut the turbo like it does in the mk4.

Even on the auto!! Thats poo? Can it be vag-com'd?

Not tried it on an auto, but they normally do. Not something that can be turned off. Problem in doing it in an auto is the box will be pulling forward and you will be holding it back kinda thing, not going to do the clutch much good.

Yeah, if I borrow a car from work and then go home I usually end up stalling it, despite driving mainly manuals during the day..lol

love the dsg if im driving steady, hardly pressing the pedal shifts up early keep revs down
but even in D not S if im giving it some poke it revs it some more and if its not enought it just kicks down a cog n off it goes its like it reads your mind!

dont really like the sport mode too much it just revs too high, il be overtaking somone on the motorway or whatever at it just sits in whatever gear its in revving the nuts off, im guessing this is more of a feature than a flaw as its expecting me to keep going rather than stopping at 70mph
easiest way i feel for overtaking is just flip the left hand paddle down one changes pretty much straight away and your away

dont really use the paddles at low speed it seems a bit sluggish when your tootling along
alot better at higher RPM
