Gear knob ware

Has anyone else’s gear stick gone like this? It’s a 70 plate and considering it’s automatic I am quite unhappy with how much damage has been caused. Is this easily removed and replaced? Worth going down the warranty route? because surly it shouldn’t go like this, only done 22k miles.

Has anyone who drives the car been using hand sanitiser or similar alcohol based hand products? There’s been a few reports over the last couple of years during the pandemic of alcohol based hand sanitisers causing damage to leather steering wheel rims and similar damage may well happen to a leather covered gear selector lever through regular contact with alcohol based products. Alternatively, does anyone who drives the car wear any jewellery that might rub against that part of the gear selector (e.g. if they drive resting their hand on the selector)?

You could try making a warranty claim but I think Seat would be likely to decline it and say the damage is the result of an ‘external influence’.

Replacements are available - this one from Aliexpress is very cheap too and is available in matt silver / chrome as well as leather;

Thanks for your input, very much appreciated.

I wouldn’t say anymore than usual with the sanitation, still find it substandard for it to go like this with not much force or use.

i have ordered the replacement part, I guess the old one just pops off and new one pops in?

This video on YouTube shows that part being removed in a mk7 Golf; from 1min 42 sec to 1 min 55 sec in the video;

Fitted an Ebay sourced Golf R DSG knob to mine. Pretty easy swap. The area you've highlighted is a gunmetal finish on the Golf R.
