saw a video of a mk4 golf dashboard going through the gears and i didnt think there was that much difference in gearing between different 02j boxs. the ibiza appears to have an extra 10mph in each gear. has anyone considered changing to the golf box for the lower gearing? i know there are advantages to the longer gearing, more time in each gear, less wheel spin, etc. discuss.......

longer gearing is good if you have the power to pull it - less gear changes needed

shorter gearing for revvy motors with narrow powerbands to keep em on the boil

if competing, gearing makes a huge difference as you need to right gears for the right corners

ibiza o2j has 3.6fd I think, maybe even a 3.3
golfs have 3.9s
some audi's have 4.2s

but even same models are likely to have different ratios dependent on year and specif engine

02J golf have 3.9?
wonder whats in Jans Lupo... long legged gears. presume same in ibiza as golf 1.8t 5spd.

I would stick with 5 gears on a turbo'd car from personal choice.
wide torque band and less (crappy VW synchro) changes

What may have been seen on video would not be known wheel & tyre size wise.

If I ran mine on my 15" rims vs 17" ones and phat tyres, you can bet ya bottom dollar the 15" speedo one would "look" the faster

not all golfs are 3.9 - this is part of the problem - but some are - likewise only some audis have the 4.2 o2j

there are a few spreadsheets on the net where people have listed whats in what - not as good info for 02a/j as for 020 - if someone can host it I have a spreadsheet with quite a collection of ratios from various gearbox codes

cheers
