Gear Trouble

So driving along today I got stuck into third, there was play in the gearstick but it wouldn't pull out of third gear, so I pulled over and had a look under the hood and something's actually broken. It's a big weighty upside-down L-shape chunk of metal stickin upwards out of the engine bay, at the end of the selector cable, which has snapped off at the bottom.

I don't know much about the transmission system at all, so if anyone could point me in the direction of what this bit is/cost of repair etc.

Car is a '98 1.9tdi, any help much appreciated!

Cheers
