Build sticker, in your service book or on the boot floor underneath the carpet. Looks like this:

It should also be stamped onto the gearbox, on a flat panel next to the gearchange mechanism. On my car it isn't very clear without cleaning the panel off.

You probably have an EGS gearbox.

Hi muttley:)yeah iknow it's a old thread but was doin some diggin on here&found this(as i'm thinking maybe quickshift&need gearbox code 2 check if any differences between 5&6speed)so using your guide looked in my serice book at this sticka thingy i think mines D3AC this sound right 4 150tdi as it says 6M in the code&it's 6 speed?

Later build sheets don't always have the gearbox code - my current car (2004 Toledo TDI 150 Sport) doesn't.

Gearbox codes are always three letters, so D3AC doesn't sound right at all.

The TDI 150 was always mated with a six-speed 02M box. The three-letter codes identify details such as gear ratios, final drives, oil spec and etc. In terms of the gearchange mechanism it is safe to say that you have an 02M box, as their construction is all the same, only the internal details differ.

The option codes will also tell you a little bit. Looking in the first line you'll find codes beginning with G. My car has

G0K 6-speed manual transmission

The Phaeton in the photo has

G0Q five-speed automatic transmission for four-wheel drive vehicle

My old Toledo TDI 110 had

G0C 5-speed manual transmission

I can find three different gearbox codes for automatic gearboxes with the 2000 Toledo and AGN engine, ECK, ELS and EPA. They are all 01MJ 4-speed boxes.

So I guess the answer is 01MJ :)

The three-letter code should be stamped on the gearbox towards the front, parallel to the gearbox/engine joint and above the starter motor. The code and the gearbox serial number should both be in this place e.g. ELS01234

Hi, Muttley

You said " They are all 01MJ 4-speed boxes" but PRND321 is mine, 05 speed.

is similar?

Thanks

PRND321 is the gear selector sequence

Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, limit 3rd, limit 2nd, limit 1st.

This also suggests you have a 4-speed transmission - meaning 4 forward speeds: Reverse isn't counted.

Hi.
Very good explanation, excellent !!!!

Thanks

Other question Muttley:
If a decide to remove that gearbox. How can remove it? I mean it get out below? , i must get out engine? What i should to do? What way?

Thanks

It is apparently possible to remove the gearbox from underneath by tilting the engine and raising the car. I've never done it. You would need a service manual to be sure, the Haynes manual does include a description of the procedure but very little else
