Hey Guys,

Has anyone changed the gearbox oil on their Cupra recently? After doing so did they think the gearbox oil needed doing? Also what oil do people reccomend to run in the Cupra 02J gearbox?

How do you go about changing the Cupra's gearbox oil, I know theres the rubber bung at the top of the box, and the allen bolt drain plug, but how much oil do you need? Is there any side leveler bungs that need taking out, you know like on GM cars how you take a bolt out the side of the box, fill it with oil untill it comes out of the bolt hole then stop and let it settle?

Any help is much appriciated, I seriously think my car needs its gearbox oil doing!

Yeh, just been looking at that. So far it seems that Redline MT-90 is reccomended and helps smooth out the gearbox, however is the Cupra like the Mk2 16v and uses 2 litres?

Also need to know if theres any side bungs to aid filling before going to drop my current oil!

you fill up from the front bumg on level ground until it pours out of the fill hole.. just a tad over 2ltrs when I last did mine a month or so back. It is not a service item however so no real "need" to do this.

I put MTL in mine and found no difference or improvement what so ever.

I tried it to help out me high rpm change/synchro crunching, but no different at all in any noticable way unfortunately on mine.

maybe gearboxes just hate you

One an a bit? So less than 2l? As MT-90 only comes in 950ml bottles.... Just checking before I go and order any!! Out of interest when you do the gearbox oil again would you use the MTL stuff or just anything?

I think clutches and gearboxes hate me too! Going to bleed the clutch, check the pedal box, do the gearbox oil and hope it sweetens it up a bit!

Guys just bought some Redline MT90 and ive found the drain plug but can anybody confirm this plastic bung is where you fill from?

Cheers fellers :)

no not there. there is another plug like the drain plug at the front of the gearbox like where the standard intercooler is. like on the front side. fill slowly till it starts to come out then put the plug bk in. just fill it slowly so it fills the diff and everything. its tight between the cooler and fill plug but its ok. even beta if u have diff cooler.

well elsawin advises 75w-90 oil for the gearbox and 2 litres of it for most if not all 02J gearboxes. I used castrol syntrax universal and so far ive noticed a lot smoother gear changes and less noise
