glow plug fault

Hi,

Few months back I had the glow plugs replaced due to fault showing on diagnostic. Subsequently no issues with the engine light coming on.

However, the light has reappeared, and the Seat vag com equiv shows same no.3 glow plug fault.

The enginner guysuggested that Seat had experienced some faults with the glow plug relay and/or wiring between the glow plug and relay.

Anyone else had this issued and if so cost implications?

I also had this problem a couple of months ago with number one cylinder. I renewed this and then had a problem with number three!
I swapped the number three with the number two and I have had no poblems since!

engine management light
diagnostics showed no. 3 glow plug
had this replaced

this morning the engine management light has come on again...

The fault in mine suggested a wiring fault. Well wiring faults dont just appear and then go away do they? Anyway thats why I swapped the plugs around. Unless the car has done lots of mileage the glow plugs should not need replacing!

It's irrelevant how many miles you have to do before a glow plug goes pop. From the top of my head they heat up to over 1000 degrees C in a very very short period of time (we're talking seconds here), so any manufacturing defects or poor installation will show up very quickly. Also, glow plugs don't work like spark plugs, they are only used for a short time while the engine is warming up, not all the time like spark plugs in a petrol engine IIRC. It's been a few years since I looked in to the workings of diesel engines so if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will put me right.

They should last close to 100k dependant on the amount of cold starts etc

I wouldn't consider 55k to be a lot of miles, over 100k I probably would.

Not sure if this helps or hinders,i work as a tec for audi and on some A4 pd engines the wiring looms were made wrong so if no3 glow plug is faulty on the fault reader it realy means no1 glow plug is faulty.All arse about face.Maybe the same for seat?

No you dont need to replace the loom at all,what i am saying is that when the fault reader is pluged in and says that no1 glow plug is faulty because the loom is wired wrong it realy means that it is no3 is faulty and so on. You should check with seat about this as only a small number of looms are afected, on certain makes/modles

would luv to know how that works are the plugs switched in pairs or single? p.s. my understanding re: the newer ceramic plugs is that if removed they should not be refitted, and if knocked or dropped should be scrapped even if new

Yes that is true the ceramic plugs are very fragile,on the 3.0 tdi engines when removing the glow plugs if they can not be removed with a torque of 8nm then the cylinder head must be removed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont panic though i dont think that any seats have these glowplugs.

i had a fault with the glow plugs on my fr took it back to the garage that i got it from, main dealer told them that it was the fuse that controls the glow plugs and that it is a regular fault on them its all ok so far but will find out at cold start in the morning
