well she is back and yup it looks like the piston rings its going to cost to much to get sorted so it looks like the doner option will be the best way to go ,

so keep your eyes and ears peeled for me guys

so what is too much then?

i'm guessing re-bore, o/s pistons?

why not strip out & break down engine yourself, get the work done & either put together yourselves or find someone cheaper?

labour rate @ Mids VW? £30-40 per hr?

at least you'll know the history of yours

mids vw said all in all around £900 mate ,
as for doing it ourselves stu works long hrs now so he wouldnt have the time to do it , we do have another abf but the top has been stripped , no cam belt etc and to start with the car was a non runner so couldnt be sure it didnt have the same problem

I'm not fussed to be honest, I don't care anymore.... There will probably be a mk2 tdi on the market soon. With some tasteful comfort mods.
