Handbrake Cable

I thought about doing it on my last Leon, but couldn't be bothered, so I wrote it off and (eventually) bought a new one instead.

AFAIAA it is fairly straightforward, just hassle having to feed the cable through. Get your head behind the rear wheel and you can see where it sits, just have to pull the claw forward and pull the ball at the end of the cable out. In car it is attached literally behind the handbrake, pop the back of the centre console by the rear ashtray off and you can see it.

Would suggest whether you try and disconnect both ends, then attach the new cable to the old one and pull it through. Don't know which way is best to pull though, sorry!

hi

i replaced both cables in a morning on my drive; fairly straight forward m8 and i'm no mechanic

I put the car on axle stands took both rear wheels off, slackened off the cables in car under the ashtray

then just pulled cables from behind the car;

new cables went in easy enough, just pushed them back though the metal pipes under the car. only thing that was annoying the new cables i got from seat where thicker than the older ones and didnt fit in the clips on the underside of the car, ended up using heavy duty cable ties around the suspension arm.

Condensing Elsawin:

Chock the front wheels, jack up the rear end and support on axle stands.

Remove center console to get at the adjuster. Loosen the handbrake lever adjuster and slip the nipples out of the balance bar.

At the calipers, slip the cable out of its clip and the nipples from the handbrake levers

Release the cables from various clips under the rear axle and body.

Attach the new cables to the calipers and handbrake levers.
Attach the new cables to the clips under the axle and body.
Slide the cables into the tube in the "transmission tunnel".
Reattach the nipples to the handbrake lever balance bar.

Adjust handbrake:
Press the brake pedal hard at least once
Handbrake lever fully off: tighten adjusting nut until the levers on the calipers just move off the stops. Maximum gap 1.5mm at each caliper - they may pull off unevenly. Easier with a mate to watch the calipers.

Repped for this! Nice one Muttley, as always, great contribution mate.

P.S - I hope you feel suitably honoured - you are the first person I have repped!

The procedure hasn't really changed much from the Mk.1 Golf days. Adjusting the handbrake is the only bit that isn't obvious.
