Well this afternoon the Mrs decided she wanted to go shopping... Quick trip down the M1 a couple of junctions and I looked down at the dash and lo and behold the temp gauge decided it would work 
Stopped and started the engine a few more times before we eventually got home and it has worked fine each time!!! 
We'll see what tomorrow brings!!!
I've had the car about 7 months and it has never worked, it was serviced last week and I wonder whether they did something which dislodged some crud or...? and it's started working
