It's a ripped-off clone version of Ross-Tech's older HEX-USB+CAN cable from before they introduced restrictions on the number of vehicles which is why it needs a cracked older version of the VCDS software.

Thanks Rusty. So is it a good buy or not? I don't have a clue

I think a good tip here is, if any seller is listed by Rosstech as being an official re-seller of their scan tools in UK, then they can be trusted, if not, they are selling ripped off illegal versions.

Normally the sort of people that buy from these scammers, then come on these motoring forums and ask for help - and normally they get told to - jog along there dumb head.

Official versions of VCDS do end up being sold on when the owner maybe changes to another motoring group, it is possible to buy a legal version used and to re-reg it in "your" name and continue as being the new owner of it, Rosstech allow for that, but many people that sell VCDS used ask for round about 80>90% of the original asking price, I am a softy and just trade in VCDS when I need a newer/later version, and that means only getting maybe £150 credit for it, better than nothing but not as good as the £285+ so people are asking for a used older version.
