Help 1.9 or1.6 tdi

Didnt realise the earlier mk 5 had the 1.9 tdi 105 bhp engine. I have the 1.6 tdi 16 months old now, 8000 miles and still waiting for some decent mpg, together with the stupid dpf I am thinking of getting shut. Like the car so maybe the 1.9 may suit me better. Any know problems with this engine, and any real life mpg.

Have had the 19 tdi 105 pd ibiza 2009 sc sport and a 19 tdi 130 vw bora sport and a 2L 170 tdi leon fr all with the pd engines no problems with any of them apart for all at some point had new sencors havent tryed a new CR but would stick with what you have got, you will never get anywear the manufacture mpg. Me and my wife have both changed car in the last 3 months (she had a diesel as well) and gone back to petrol engines.

The money you'll loose in switching will never be regained by any increase in MPG, and you don't even do enough miles to warrant a diesel.

If you were gonna change to anything get a 1.2 TSI, but in all honesty I'd stick with what you have.

Had the 1.9 TDI in a Golf, its an old engine very rattly and noisy, delivers all its power in one go and not amazingly economical either. Its OK but I'm sure the 1.6 TDI CR is much better. The power and torque figures are the same.

I agree with markmeus, if you do change a petrol is the way forward, your mileage simply isn't high enough to warrant owning a diesel.

ive got the 1.6 cr tdi and am fortunate to have good mpg. i have driven the fabia (new shape) with the 1.9pd (105ps) and have to say there is nothing in it in terms of performance, the 1.6 (well mine anyway) got about 15mpg more on a 60 mile run (1.9 = 53 ish and the 1.6 = 68 ish)

Wish I could only do those miles, 18 months 34k and counting! Stick with it I reckon but if you must swap 1.2tsi probably

Diesels cost more and servicing is usually more hence them making more money for someone who doesnt require one

I have to agree with allh2k, the OP has only done 8000 miles in 16 months. In which case he would be financially better off with a petrol car.

However the op probably wanted a diesel for reasons best known to him and thats what he got.

tbh i do similar miles to the OP and i dont think a petrol would be cheaper, i get better mpg, road tax is less, more power (probably), I cant imagine service cost been that much higher? they may cost more to buy but they also hold there value more so its a catch 22. i gues which petrol you go for has its advantages but at the end of the day its personal preferance.

I just think that the statement made by allh2k was based on a load of assumptions and was not helpful to the OP in anyway so thought i would question it

Exactly, I also don't do huge miles, 12-13k a year, but I opted for the diesel because I knew it would be nicer to drive compared to the alternative which at the time was the 1.6 petrol. However now with the 1.2 TSI available it would probably have been the engine I'd have gone for.

I have a 1.9 TDI Sport which i have run for two years now (32k) with no issues or problems.
No dpf best mpg was 67.5 and i average 55-58.

See the flip side of the coin is that I've never had the DPF light come on in my 1.6 TDI and my best ever mpg was 71.1

I know some 1.6 TDIs seem to have crap MPG but mine is consistently better than my friends mk4 1.9 TDI - it's all swings and roundabouts.

same here, i get better mpg than my dad driving his fabia by a fair amount. ive achieved 72.5 ish mpg on and 80 mile trip and 71 mpg ish on a 180 mile trip. I did get about 77mpg on a 27mile trip once too (from cold). i dont think the 1.9pd could match this.

Thanks all for your comments and advice, I bought the Ibiza as a 2nd car ( under the scrappage deal) to keep for many many years, I also run an SLK, I have rejected the car because of its poor mpg and dpf issues, the dealer is attempting (for the last 12m) to help me out in getting a more economical car he has a 1.9 coming in hence the post, straight swap for mine , older, less spec, more miles, but better mpg he thinks, they have also offered to do a fuel ecconomy test on my car, will take 2-3 days, they think I have a heavy right foot, havent said yet what they will do when they get the same mpg as me!!, probably go this route , awaiting, as ever for a call off them, this is the 3rd sales manager I have had to deal with, keep you posted on the outcome.

Absolutely do not do a straight swap for that 1.9 TDI! If its older with less spec and more miles then its going to be worth a LOT less than yours, and should only be considered if they are offering cash on top.

I have a 1.6 TDI CR, great little engine if a little underpowered. Mine has 14000 miles on the clock and fuel economy depends on how I drive it. If I'm ultra economical, I can get 70+ MPG on a 60 MPH road. At 70 I get just below 60 mpg.

Get the latest software upgrade, it sorted my DPF problems.

Even if I drive the car as hard as I can, it still gets 50 + mpg, all I want is an extra 40 BHP. I'm afraid an engine remap might cause DPF regen issues, if I was sure it wouldn't, I would get it mapped tomorrow.

AMD in Thurrock say they can remap it with an extra 30 BHP for £400inc VAT if anyone else is interested.
