Hello all,

Looking for a bit of guidance on removing and cleaning the EGR valve in a 2011 ibiza TDI.

I've read this can be a common problem and happen every 30k mile or so and looking to learn how to sort this myself instead of handing it to the dealership.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

This is a complicated procedure if your not a competent mechanic who knows what they are doing. Unfortunately it is not in an easy to get to place.

Firstly have you heard of Terraclean?? They pump refined fuel round and its pretty good at cleaning out the gunk from the engine, turbo and EGR.

Secondly, I guessing your car is eligible for the EA189 emission fix, if so, have you had it done?? If you have, you can talk to Seat UK as a lot of people have had this failure after the fix and have had the repair cost reduced or free as VW want to keep failures hush hush.

If you want to continue I recommend you get a good manual with good pictures to assist you. In Elsa the procedure is the following:

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t Hose clamps up to Ø 25 mm -3094-, see equivalent
t Box wrench set for lambda probe -3337-, see equivalent
t Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-, see equivalent
t Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-, see equivalent
t Collector tray for workshop crane -VAS 6208-, see equivalent
t Pliers for spring-loaded band-type clamps -VAS 6499-, see equivalent

–Remove engine cover panel
–Remove the air filter housing

–Remove crankcase breather hose, press release buttons for this.
–Unscrew bolt, swing intake hose and intake unions to rear and pull off of turbocharger.
–Remove noise insulation

-Remove bolts
–Loosen hose clip and remove pulsation damper.
-Loosen particulate filter.

Disconnect the following connectors:
t -1-exhaust temperature sender 1 -G235- connector
t -2-exhaust temperature sender 3 -G495- connector
t -3-exhaust temperature sender 4 -G648- connector
t -4-Lambda probe -G39- connector

- Unplug electrical connector.
– Unscrew screws, remove the differential pressure sender -G505- and loosen the hoses.
– Pull lines out of retainers on engine and remove heat shield from particulate filter; if necessary remove cable ties.

- Unscrew the bolt from the centre support of the particle filter mount.
– Remove securing clamp between particulate filter and turbocharger.
Note
The flexible joint in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° - otherwise it can be damaged.

– Fix the transport lock -T10403--arrow- on the decoupling element in the front exhaust pipe.
– Unscrew bolts and then nuts.

– Pull the particulate filter from its brackets in the mountings -arrows-.
– Slacken the fastening nuts -arrows- of the clamping sleeve and then lower the exhaust pipe to the rear.
– Remove the particulate filter and fix accordingly on the steering box in order not to damage it.
– Remove connection pipe leading to cooler for exhaust gas recirculation.
– Unscrew connecting pipe only at exhaust gas recirculation cooler -arrows-.
Catch leaking oil used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-.

Threaded connection must not be loosened.

– In order to unscrew the union nut, counterhold the threaded connection.
– Unscrew the bolts and the banjo bolts.
– Remove turbocharger support and oil supply line.

– Disconnect connector.

– Disconnect vacuum hose from the vacuum switch and move clear.

– Clamp off the coolant hoses with hose clamps -3094- and detach hoses from the exhaust gas recirculation radiator. For this purpose loosen the hose clamp.

– Remove bolts -arrows- and detach the radiator for the exhaust gas recirculation.

Installation

Tightening torques
l Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:
l Install the oil supply line and oil return line (turbocharger support)
l Install particulate filter

Note
t Renew gaskets, seals and self-locking nuts → Electronic parts catalogue.
t Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) → Electronic parts catalogue.
t If the particulate filter or the pressure differential sender -G505- are removed or installed, the pressure differential sender -G505- must be adapted using the vehicle diagnostics tester in all cases: Guided functions; pressure differential sender -G505-: adapting.
– Fill up coolant
– Checking engine oil level

Hi,

Thank you for the detailed instruction. Dam that's a lot more involved than I first thought!

Is there any alternatives? I've seen some spray you can get from Halfords, I'm assuming it will be nowhere near as good as cleaning it by hand but have you had an experience with it?

I'll give terraclean a Google! Thanks!

I haven't used any but the only good one i know of is sea foam, however this is a general engine clear.

Personally I would avoid these things as they can cause issues on modern cars with MAF/MAP sensors, as well as destroy internal engine components.

Terra clean is just fuel, so shouldn't destroy anything like sensors or internal engine bits. But it is a bit more expensive, i was quoted £110 for mine.

How did you find terraclean? I'm just looking up a couple garages who do it near me.
