The steering wheel is a few degrees out, not a massive amount.

Straight after, when I braked, it was very soft but came back after a few presses.

Pedal was soft because one way or another the impact has knocked the pads + piston back into the caliper. It takes a couple of presses to put the pads back against the disk.

ah, ok that explains it. Does that mean that it was a really hard impact then?

I guess if I'd have steered into it and hit it straight rather than on the side of the wheel then I'd have probably got away with a dent in the rim only?

not many people have the mind to pre empt a problem like this before it happens, unless they have suffered it before!!
Next time it happens(hopefully not!!) you might be more prepared--depending on circumstances!!

I don't think it would have been much better really mate. It just transfers rhe force in another direction. I'm involved with a VW Cup car, and we get pad 'knock off' sometimes if you are a bit aggresive over the kerbs on some circuits. It means double pumping before the next corner to get the pedal back.
I'd be very suprised if the steering rack was damaged, but a track rod control arm may well be wrecked. Of course, you may be very lucky and be able to dial out the damage through the tracking adjustment if the steering wheel is just a few degrees out, but let the experts check it out.

thanks.

I've never heard about the pad thing before!

My brother works in a bodyshop so he's taking a look tomorrow, I'll put the spare on and then see how bent it looks.

Update: In the light of day its not obvoius what is bent. 90% sure its the wishbone as the wheel is definately in at the bottom.

Anyone know a reliable and trustworthy garage with a geometry machine and 4 wheel alignment in Beds or Bucks?

I'm going to get a wishbone anyway and compare geo before and after.

Update and help please.

I've now had the lower arm and strut replaced but the wheel is still sticking out at the top (so if you look from the front of the car you can see the tyre on the passenger side but its inside the wheel arch on the drivers side)

What else could be causing this?

have you had it on the ramps and had a look? the camber could be out, has it been 4 wheel aligned?

Yes, I've had it 4 wheel aligned and geometry. Its pretty straight aparently which is why they are unsure what is throwing the wheel out now.

Could it be the hub?

it cant be ok if the wheels ar out one side and in the other, i have wheel problems at the min too, i was pushed over into a kerb when the car was black and it bent the wishbone, threw the tracking out loadshad alot of toe out on the passenges side but got it aligned by a ver knoledgeable bloke in notts, but i still need a cv joint and bearing.

could the bottom part of the car have been slid across causing in on one side and out on the other.

Turning right tonight, lit the wheels up to try and get me around when I realised I was going straight on, hit the near side front wheel HARD into the curb.

Stearing wheel is quite a bit out and the brakes feel funny (although I may have cooked them).

Any ideas what kind of damage I could have done?

You may want to read this thread which details what went wrong with my front left suspension/wheel mounting components when I hit a curb hard.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I had a read.

Its only cost me £80 odd quid so far as all labour has been free, so even with a hub I'm still going to be under my excess had I claimed anyway.

The sub frame would not be throwing the wheel out would it?

Think its the case that if anything obvious looks damaged/bent it can be changed then the alignment checked as in my case. Slightly bent Subframe was one of the components in my case that were causing the problem.
I basically had everything changed in order to get the alignment back to within Seats tolerences for the Leon.

LOL. I read your thread on it! Sorry about that.

You never know... my costs could keep going up and up.... and up.... and up! (but I hope not!)
