Horn issue

Evening all. My horn has completely stopped working overnight. I’ve checked the fuse in the engine bay box and that’s fine. I could understand if just one had stopped as it’s a twin horn setup, one each side of the bumper, but both together all of a sudden? Is it an easy job to access the horns so I can test on a direct 12v? Not sure how much play there is if removing the fog lamp or if it’s a bumper off job. Thanks in advance.

You've tested the fuse and the relay?

I'd be surprised if it's the horns themselves that have both blown simultaneously.

Fuse is all good. Swapped for another even though it shows no signs of damage but nothing. Relay is not clicking so I’ve ordered another one that comes tomorrow. Fingers crossed it’s that as it’s an easy swap compared to the horns 🤣.

So I’ve replaced the relay with a brand new one and still nothing. Not even clicking when I press the horn/steering wheel. Would that suggest the clock spring or whatever it’s called behind the wheel? Surely if the horn was at fault the relay would still click?

could be the connector on the steering wheel, the clock spring, or a break anywhere between the horns and the button

Think I’ll go to an auto electrician instead then. Rather pay to find out the cause than keep throwing money at it trying to find a solution. Appreciate the reply.

If the airbag is easy to remove then might be worth having a look yourself. Usually just a ground connection that's made when you press the airbag agaist the wheel. Not sure about the setup on the mk2 , but most horns work that way.

Evening all, so I still have the issue. I have had the horns off and checked and they both work fine. Relay replaced, dues checked. I’ve even replaced the clock spring but I’m still getting nothing from the horns. Would VCDS bring anything up if I could find someone local to Tamworth that would check it?

Going to check this out once I’ve had a kip, just finished my nights. Thanks for the advice.

I’ve taken the airbag off again this morning (battery disconnected) and checked all the plug connections by unplugging and reconnecting a few times just to make sure they’re all making good connection ie no corrosion etc but still nothing. Would replacing the airbag unit possibly rectify this issue? Didn’t really fancy trying to take the back off for obvious reasons. Can get a second hand unit on eBay for not too much money.

Shouldn't have thought so. Airbag unit normally just presses against the contacts, doesn't usually contain anything horn related.

Would I be right in saying the contacts are all inside here though? Was a bit wary of actually splitting it open to check as I’m not sure how to open it if I’m honest. Didn’t wanna knacker it up by trying.

Yeah looks like they should be inside of that. It's a lot different design to the mk1 so not familiar with how it's set up.

Reckon it’d be easy enough to separate to check the contacts? Or would I be asking for trouble and creating another possible issue for myself? I’ll put my hand to most things but never messed with an airbag unit before 🤣

Just been to an auto electrician and they want £100 just to have a look. Wondering if it’s worth just replacing the airbag unit to try first. There’s a few on eBay for less than £50. He did mention that the clock spring might need to be coded in? Guessing that would be a VCDS job. Nobody I know near to me has it so I’m stuck for that.

I wouldn't mate, too dangerous and probably not possible to get it back together again.

Yeah that’s my thinking also. I’ve bit the bullet and booked into a different auto electrician recommended by my go to garage. I only use this garage and have done for over 15 years so trust them and their recommendations completely. Booked into for Tuesday next week so will post an update (hopefully sorted) when it’s done. Appreciate the replies, cheers.
