On my car i can hear the turbo whistling away no blue smoke or anything coming from the exhaust, i wonder if the last owner had it remaped or ive got a panel filter in the car ill have to check.

This thread may have brightened my day.

I am having issues that sound perhaps similar... Although i do have a metalic-type grind at certain RPM (could this be linked or will it seriously be turbo). I do also have a remapped '56 fr petrol.

hmmm....

As above the diverter valve is a common failure on the earlier cars although this would not cause a grinding noise.
Is your grinding noise def from the turbo and not a heatsheild or something?
Also how many miles have you done?

just updating this thread and i will continue to until i'm satisfied with a result.

i think its best to help others with the same problem.

so today on the way home from work. i let the car warm up take it on the motorway. put it in 6th and let it sit at 60. ive accelerated and it has picked up, starts to pull and i'm doing 80 pulling right up still. Now because i haven't done this before i'm not sure if the pick up was as normal but it felt ok. although the foot was on the floor if not nearly palnted.

i then drive to a bit of country lane that is national speed limit so i start punching it. Its not bad. The ground is dry but there still is wheel spin in first. a tiny bit in second and it seems to pull in third too. But just not what i remember.

the noise i'm getting sounds like the turbo but its hard to describe. It literally just could be the turbo spooling up but again its my first petrol turbo so i'm unsure.

I'm still going to order the rev d valve from sere motors when he's free to reply to me. then i'll check for pipe splits. although i dont think its a split pipe because its not a whistle sound i'm getting.

some times it just seems its rapid then sometimes not so much lol

side note - how hard is it to take engine cover off????

cheers lads

Kevs fr - Cheers for the response. I am not 100% certain it is from the turbo but it just feels/sounds like it is as its when I am climbing through the rev range and the turbo has kicked in...perhaps I am being paranoid. There is a slight rattle every now and then on startup but I have never thought about it really. I don't know if it could be related. If the grinding was from the heatshield or the like would it be only at one place in the rev range (I guess it could be in only one place where the vibrations are right) and it doesnt happen every time I hit those revs. but it does seem to be getting more often.

andy - Sounds like we may have similar problems. I havent really noticed a drop in power though. What is this noise you are getting again? Is it always there? I am taking mine in to the garage tomorrow for them to have a look and I will get them to show me. I will let you know the result dude. I'm sure they will be thorough (I did give them a business contract for all vehicles in the company I work for after all!!)

On a fr the turbo spools early so I'd of thought if the turbo was causing your noise it would be there from 2000 rpm all the way through the rev range.
How many miles has your fr done?

alright mr lee.

you say you hear a grinding but i'm not sure i hear that on mine. i hear the injectors popping away, but not much on driving but its hard to hear things through the wind and road noise.

on start up i hear the alternator a bit but it sounds ok

and when i say drop in power. its not a hesitation as such its just not as rapid as when i first bought it. but sometimes i think, yeah that's fast then it seems like the turbo isn't working.

I think its roughly 2500 rpm. Just started it up and listened for a while and it seems a bit rattly... It's done 52,000

Andy- Ah right, maybe different issues then. hmmm. let me know how this rev d valve works out for you. hopefully it will sort you out :)

lee is your noise from start up? is it more from the left side of the engine bay than the right.

every fr or cupra has a tapping noise but thats normal. its just the injectors.

if its coming from the left side of the engine bay it could be the belt, or alternator causing this? stick your ear right down. is it a different noise form left to right of engine bay?

I have figured out the Quote button!!

The grind noise is not from start up and is only when the car is moving. When listening to it yesterday I think I was just being paranoid and at idle it was pretty normal (I had a flap moment!) Guess just the injectors are a bit noisey on these engines.

Took it in to the local garage today and they said alternator seems fine. It is now at a specialist getting a full diagnostics done.

Cheers :)
