Whilst outside today washing and polishing my car, i noticed a few new scratches on it. Some cheeky scroat [:@] has ran a key down the bonnet (10 inch and down to primer) and. a few long scratches on the roof. Luckily the ones on the roof have polished out but the one on the bonnet is too deep. My bonnet has quite a few stone chips on it so needs some work done on it anyway.

How much would a full respray set me back and does anyone know of a decent bodyshop in the northampton or milton keynes area? It's not worth just spraying the bonnet because its an ovni yellow LC and it's faded pretty bad now. In fact the only things not faded are the rear spolier and petrol cap cover.

All depends what colour you go for and who your happy to get to do it. I have had one of my cars in for a full respray from a guy my mate new wo had conveted his double garage into a spray booth. That cost me £900. But I no if you went to a proper body shop your looking at more like £1000-1500 I would of said. Like I said I had it done cheap and the only down side was that cause it werent a proper sealed off spray booth I ended up having a fly land on the front bumper. Was really hard to see and didn't notice till a few weeks later but still looked the nuts

A full outside same colour respray from a reputable professional bodyshop is likely to cost you £1500-2000 ish, maybe more, and you want to ask exactly what you are getting for your money as there are plenty of shortcuts that can be taken. Things to ask are what will be taken off the car, if they will be masking things up rather than removing them etc, for instance door handles and mouldings are far better off being removed to achieve a good finish around the apertures. Be mindful badges and other stick on items are generally considered once only items in commercial bodyshops, so the cost of these has to be factored in also.

Like all things, you get what you pay for, and you need to make sure you discuss with the chosen shop in detail what they are doing to make sure you are happy with it, it's alot of money at the end of the day and you will have a harder job complaining if you leave things to chance.

To give an example, a few years ago I restored a CRX, which I spent over 200 hours stripping/priming/prepping/painting and now the finish is like glass, but 80% of the work was in the prep, blocking it down by hand.

A commercial bodyshop should at least DA the panels down to remove any imperfections like scratches and chips before painting, and they may need to prime areas that are worse, so be up front from the start about what you want and you'll be fine.

Where I work your looking at £2000 - £3000 for a full respray.

But thats an insurance approved bodyshop that has 6 booths etc etc so not the cheapest of places.

hhhmmmm it's quite an old car (2001 x) and a full respray would probably cost more than the cars worth then. I'd probably stay with the same colour, I like the yellow.

Maybe worth looking into a matt black bonnet and roof instead of a whole respray. The rest of the bodywork is ok, although faded. Maybe a proper polish by a pro would bring it up well.

Bad news about the scratch, what's a recommended polish to get minor scratchs and nicks out of metallic paintwork.

Wrap is cheaper but when you sell you might need to take the wrap off and still have to get the bonnet painted.

Dont quote me on this but I heard it is the laquere on the yellow ones etc that makes it look faded. Could u not get the bonnet resprayed and then the rest of the car rubbed down and re-laqurered or is this not something that can be done.

just the thought of after 5 year you have to pay to get it done again when if you get a decnt paint job and maintain well whilst washing will last forever

it the prep work of any bodyshop that cost the most, there are plenty of back street garages out there that will do cheap resprays but you get what you pay for at the end of it

I think by the time I'll be buying a new car, this one will be showing 200k or more. It's currently showing 106k and I can't really afford to buy something newer until the wife has graduated from Uni which is in 3 years. Then we need to buy a new house first so new car will be at least 4 years or more away. If the wrap comes with 5 year lifetime i'd be happy with it.

I think i'll investigate wrapping the bonnet and maybe roof in carbon fibre and then get someone to look at the rest of the paintwork to see what can be done. I really want a remap and a FMIC. i think FMIC will come from a kit off fleabay as they seem to be quite reasonably priced.
